Fallout 2: Leveling NPC's...

After a good long 2 year search {game time :P At the start of the game} I've
finaly found my favorite companion Dogmeat :)

The fact that he starts out with 98 hitpoints {im only at 57 :P} is pretty
good, and he also does more damage than me {5 attacks when he standing right
next to a target}.

BUT I am having trouble getting him up in levels. I've gone up 3 levels so
far, without him going up even one. I am fully prepared to go back before
those 3 levels and do the "right" thing to make sure he goes up in a levels
as well. The problem is I dont know what those "things" are.

Any ideas?

As far as I understand it, NPCs with you will gain a level once you've
gained enough levels in their presence. This has always been the case
with me. It may be you need to gain 4, 5, 6, or somesuch number, rather
than just 3. It's been too long for me to recall which is the case,
unfortunately.

As I understand it, every time you level up your NPC's have a chance of
leveling up aswell, up to a maximum level but since you only have 57 Hp this
is a much later issue. I works something like this. First time you level up
with a new NPC your NPC have a 25% chance of leveling up. If he doesn't
level up it's 50% the next time, 75% and finally 100%.
When the NPC levels up the process starts over. I'm not totally sure about
the numbers, but I have noticed that if you save before you level up and
your NPC's don't level up you can reload, gain the level again and they have
a new chance of gaining levels.
