I've got Daggerfall with the 179 patch. I've just been sent to kill an orc
leader ( plus some orcs) in a dungeon. I've been all through the dungeon, come
out of it and re-entered and gone throgh it again and never seen a single orc
let alone an orc leader. I'm sure I've got the right dungeon.
If it were any other game I'd say that I wasn't thorough enough and go back and
look a third time but DF is so bugged anyway that I don't know if it's me or
the a bug.
Has this happened to anybody else?
Thanks in advance,

I've done a bunch of dungeons, in Daggerfall, and I've never had a
missing quest target (yet!).
Go over the automap inch by inch, looking for any hidden doors or
areas you haven't investigated yet. I had one dungeon where I KNEW
I'd investigated everything, and I was running out of time for the
quest. I decided to go over the automap one last time, and found a
secret door I'd overlooked - just a short distance from the dungeon
entrance! And the werewolf I was looking for was in that area.
Also, be careful to check ceilings - I found a red brick teleporter in
the ceiling joist of one room (it didn't show up on the map), and it
was the path to a secret area where the person I was looking for was
hiding. And sometimes there are holes in the ceiling that are
vertical shafts leading to otherwise inaccessible areas.
And have you tried using every elevator block you've found? In one
case, I'd already been to what I thought was the only other location
the block went to - but when I rode the block, I discovered a hidden
corridor halfway between where the block started and where it stopped.
A quick climb, and I found a whole new section of the dungeon to
explore.

By the way, at least at lower levels I found that the quest beastie or item
tended to be at the same spot in certain types of dungeons in side quests.
For example, in dungeons featuring the large area with bridges over a big
pit and rooms all around the area, at least half the time I found the quest
beastie in a room off a corridor leading away from the bottom of the pit.
And in the Privateers Hold type dungeons (like the one you start the game
in), the quest beastie was usually found in the area you started from at
the opening of the game. Finally, in Sentinel side quests, if you get one
in Castle Fojim (sp) turn left immediately at the dungeon entrance. The
beastie will be about 100 yards away in a large room.
Happy Hunting,

I took a fighter's guild quest that they didn't recommend to kill a
lich. I succeeded in killing it but got nonr of the usual confirmation
like " you've killed the lich that,s buggin' the BLANK"
so I headed back to the guild to collect but saved before I talked to
the quest giver. He told me I was a candy ass for not killin the thing
and berated me in front of the guild.
I reloaded and struck up another conversation with him and this time he
congradulated me and said he lost money on the bet that I'd succeed.
It's the random factor that make the game more realistic that life
isn't fair and once in a while you'll get beat for your hard work
but(hehe) the reload is a good equalizer in the unfair world of
daggerfall. I find that not just reload but also quiting the game is
necessary to change the events when dealing with some npc's attitudes
there seenms to be info in the ram memory that will still effect the
outcome even when reloading.

Sometimes the monster you are looking for is behind a secret door, some
of them can be hard to find. If you exit the dungeon and go back in,
all the occupants will be back again. The one particular one you are
looking for will probably still be in their same hiding place.
Sometimes the one you are looking for falls into the void or into an
object or wall. Once when I was fighting a slaughterfish I knocked it
right through the floor. You could just see the top of its fin through
the floor. I could not hit it anymore, eventually it just disappeared.

I failed some quests too. But I think it's me who can't find
a needed things. Every time, every new dungeon I found some new
puzzles that give me access to new parts of dungeon.
Sometimes I need to levitate, another times I need to press
something unusial. OTOH mage guild and others have some simple
quests like guard 3 hours or kill a spider/tiger inside
someone's house.
Now if I can't solve dungeon in 2-3 hours I leave it.
Don't know about special quests like queen's quest - I never
failed one yet.

Dumping the RAM changes a lot more than NPC's attitudes. Last night I
was on the letter quest. There were two ancient lichs in the room
where I suspected the letter might be. Instant paralyzation and death
was the order of the day. I tried no less than 10 times with the same
result. Getting pissed off didn't help so I shut the computer down.
After firing the game up today, there was only one lich in the room
and he was a cupcake. Lesson learned - if you run into an impossible
situation or a combat that cannot be won, save the game, shut down the
computer, and try again. The scenerio will completely different when
you restart. It may not be necessary to entirely shut down the
computer but it does work if you do.

I've been assigned the same quest with the same results. AND I know that I
searched every where. I think the problem was that I was assigned the
quest while still a 1st level mage. I am 5th level now and everywhere I go
I run into orcs. I rarely run into bats, rats etc. Mummies and skeletons
are quite common though. I believe the AI increases the monster
type/strength as you go up levels. And thats why I believe I couldn't
complete the kill orc quest at a low level. The game wouldn't allow me to
find them 'cuz they wuda' snuffed my puny ass in half a heart beat!
