Some spells just don't seem worth the high casting cost. Shrapmetal has
never impressed me, for example... Doing 1-4 (or is it 1-6? I don't have
the docs or the game handy right now) per level in the spell isn't nearly
as good as Acid Burst or Implosion.
Even worse are the single-target non-damage spells like Paralyze, Slow, or
Shrinking. This is something I've noticed in other games as well:
There's no point in using spells like these against lower-level monsters
that you can simply kill with weapons or damage spells, and higher-level
monsters tend to be immune to them.
Does Mass Curse even do anything? I've cast it on groups of monsters, and
nothing seemed to happen. If I can't tell the difference between a spell
failing or working, I'm not likely to use it.
Golden Touch seems useless if you've got a Master Merchant in the party,
and I can't remember the last time I needed food badly enough to use
Create Food.
I have found Day of the Gods, Hour of Power, Sun Ray, Dragon Breath,
Prismatic Light, and Day of Protection to be useful (I ended up setting PL
as my auto-spell in the big room in the Superior Temple of Baa).
On a side note, I vaguely remember reading something about an upper limit
on spell effects... That there was no point to raising a spell skill
above a certain number because it no longer added dice/points to damage
spells. This isn't true, is it? My mage is up to 17 Fire Magic and I'd
hate to be throwing points away adding to this.
Thanks,
Karl

Try using Shrapmetal when you're literally nose to kneecap with a Titan or a
dragon. It's VERY effective that way, where ALL of the little bits of
shrapnel can hit the same monster for 8-10 (or whatever) points per bit.

Toxic Cloud can also be useful against monsters that are impervious to both
Incinerate and Prismatic Light, but aren't worth the huge casting cost of
Dragon Breath.
And if you cast Armageddon for 3 - 6 days straight, 3 times a day, camping
out inbetween, then you ought to be able to clear all of the seamonsters
from Hermit's Isle and most of the Hydra as well. Possibly some of the
Titans and Noble Titans as well. This also works in Dragonsands and has
been known to kill all but Gold Dragons. And in Alamos and Paradise Valley
as well.
You must camp out between days and not leave the area, tho. If you leave
the area then those monsters who have been only partially damaged will be
fully healed when you return. They will not fully heal if you spend the
night resting in the map section that you are destroying.

This is only true if you don't have the patch installed. Some sort of
glitch in the game will kick in if you have too high a skill level - the
sort you can reach by having a skill of 25 + fire ring + Morgan +
Spellcaster NPC + Mystic NPC. (A combination which can produce truly
awesome damage with the Incinerate spell!)

Hey, is that a pun?
You covered the most useful spells very well. It's tough to decide
which of the useless spells is the worst, but the only one I never
tried at all was Create Food. With an overnight stay at the Inn in
New Sorpigal costing only one gold piece, and free food offered there
to my master merchant, I can only presume the Create Food spell would
come in handy early in the game. But I think it would be silly to
spend the gold needed for a gatemaster, dark skill, and the spellbook
early on. Perhaps someone else found a use for Create Food.
I did want to mention, also, that I found Divine Intervention to be
very useful, after clearing a path to the Fountain of Youth.
Huh? Don't you have to cast DI either at dawn or dusk only?
To me, that's a serious handicap. I might as well Portal back
and visit the temple to get my guys and gals fixed up. I can
do that (just about almost) any time I want.
Later...
