Always examine food before you eat it. Food you pick up from corpses
or from chests can be poisonous. If a PC does get poisoned use the
item that looks like blue berries on them.

It's always a good idea to bookmark often. Aside from that, I don't
remember if you can examine bad guys or not.

Definately emphasize it with at least one character ... I don't think
you need it during the first chapter though. The trapdoor you need to
take has a sign by it, I think. Go past it and explore the maze for a
while. You will find the key you need.

I think it is in parts, but I think there might be random encounters
too. I'm not sure though.

I never had to buy rations. Just strip every enemy you kill of his
rations and items and sell the items in towns.

Most likely it's due to food poisoning. Check the rations you pick up from
corpse (by right clicking on them). Ditch the poisoned and spoiled ones.
If however you get poisoned in combat (unlikely in chapter 1), you can use
restoratives (green vail) on them, but it takes a lot.

Save often, that's the only way.

Locking picking is a great skill to have, although not vital in chapter 1 but
in a later chapter. Make Gorath your lock picker. You can't pick any of the
grates in sewer, explore it and eventually you will get a key.

I think so.

Bard in an inn will net you some cash, as well as selling the junk you get
from corpses. Buy a couple of practice flutes for Owyn. A shop north of
your starting point sells some.
Hello, fellow gamers!
Since Sierra released "Betrayal of Krondor" for free I decided to give it a try
(I tried to play a few before, namely Dungeon Master 2 and Ultima Underworld
but wasn't impressed for some reason) and this game really sucked me in! By
that I mean that go to sleep some 2 hours later than usual, think in this game's
terms and so on. I'm still in chapter 1 (what would you expect from
unexperienced gamer after only few days of playing?) and although I managed to
approach Krondor once (no luck down in sewers, though) I still have some very
basic questions:
1) Sometimes one or more from my party become poisoned and I don't have any
antidote. I manage to heal them eventually by using herbal packs and resting
but I either run out of herbal packs or use up tremendous amount of food. How
do you handle/prevent such a situation?
2) How can I determine the probable outcome of an encounter - toughness of
opponents, spellcasting abilities, whatever? Or should I just bookmark and
restore the game hoping for better times?
3) Lockpicking: should I emphasize lockpicking of some character or it is
possible to finish chapter 1 without it (I find some ladder in sewers but
it is locked too tightly - can I find/buy a key for it?).
4) Is the map all set up (I mean, do I always find the same in the same places
or are there any fluctuations)?
5) How can I keep my money amount hight enough? I spend everything on rations
and don't have enough items to sell due to inventory limitations?
More questions to come,

It is the same each game. However, the same places may have different
things in later chapters.

It took me a while to figure this out, but you have to examine the
food packets - some are spoiled and some are poisened. Pitch the bad
ones.

It sounds like I'm at about the same point as you (I never got around
to playing BAK before, so I thought I'd take a look now).

Check over the food supplies that you pick up very carefully -
some of them are either spoilt or poisoned - if you leave them in your
inventory to be eaten, then you'll have a lot of problems.. Throw
them away!
