Eventually I went back to the hag's cave, and there again was the hairbrush
with the required hair. *Again* I took the hairbrush, which disappeared but
left me with a lock of hair just as it had the first time. *Again* I went
back to the apothecary in Guberland City, and *again* the lock of hair just
disappeared without my getting anything for it.
Am I missing something here? This has me completely stymied. Is this another
bug?
Seneca
It has been awhile, but I think you have to talk to the nutty guy himself who
is in that cage outside Markel's hall. You "give" him a potion and he is cured.
However, for some reason, no one bothers to ever let him out!
Scut
And the quest 'breaks' if you don't? That's silly. [I found the hag and
hair before I talked to him.]
Tom
Actually when I did that the nutty guy started talking better, but for
some reason it still doesn't say the quest is completed.
Tom
Thanks, I'll try that . . . if I can find him. Although the apothecary
*mentions* the nutty guy in the cage or "idiot box" or whatever it is, and
seems to assume I've seen him, I have not. Maybe I've just missed him, but
I've been all over the town many times. I'll look again.
I don't know where Markel's hall is either. The maps in MM9 sure leave a lot
to be desired, compared to the maps in MM6 through 8.
Thanks again,
Seneca
Thanks, but I did that. In fact three times now I've spoken to the
apothecary first, then gone to the hag's cave to get the hair. Always the
same non-result.

Heh, I would have thought that this hall is about the easiest building
to find in all of MM9... it's right in the center of Guberland, all
the main avenues lead straight to it, and the nutty guy's cage is
right next to the main entrance!

Oh, *that* is Markel's hall? :-)
The name just didn't ring a bell. I guess I'm getting mixed up with all the
names. Thanks, Christoph.

Still no joy. I have now gone back and forth to the hag in the cave five or
six times, trying to do everything all over again in the order that the game
expects. The same thing happens every time. I get the lock of hair (again!),
go back to the apothecary, the hair disappears, he says nothing about it,
and I get no potion or anything else. When I go back to the guy in the cage,
he's still speaking in mixed-up sentences.
I'm about ready to give up on this. Without the promotion to healer there's
not much point in my continuing the game. My best guess is that I did
something out of order or didn't touch on some base when I first came to
Guberland, and now it's too late. It's annoying that such a bug would pass
into the published game, let alone the patch (which of course I have
installed).
My last hope is to try the unofficial patch that you link to on your site.
If that doesn't help, that's it for me.
Too bad they put this game out in such an unfinished form, though I can
understand the financial problems that must have compelled them to do it.
There's a lot to love about MM9, if only it had really been finished.

That sounds bad. This particular quest worked at first attempt for
me. Possibly you disturbed some of the flags in the (probably buggy)
quest code by doing it the "wrong" way a couple of times -- is there
any chance of going back to an earlier save?

I was thinking of that. But good news, it's all fixed now--though I really
don't know why.
Here's what happened: I followed some of the links on your site (which is
great and much appreciated, by the way) and came to someone's suggestion
about deleting the "minisave" files related to a particular city or area, in
order to reset it. I thought that would be good to do with Guberland City,
so that I could start all over there.
I thought I'd better get out of Guberland City first, and did so, then saved
and got out of the game. I found the minisave files all right, but started
to have second thoughts. There were one or two other things I'd done in
Guberland City that I did *not* want to lose by resetting, and there are so
many of the minisave files for both the city and Guberland region that I was
afraid I'd really screw things up if I started mucking around with them. So
I went back into the city (having no clear idea of what I'd do), revisited
all the usual suspects in what I thought was the proper order, and ended up
back at the apothecary's. *This* time to my astonishment he did give me the
potion!
I had done nothing that I hadn't done before, *except* that this time I did
*not* go to the hag's cave. I just exited the city, then went back in as
described. None of this makes much sense to me. :-)
Anyway, now having the potion I went to the nutty guy in the cage, gave it
to him, cured him, and when I went back to whatsisname in the temple I got
my promotion to healer. So I'm all set, until the next buggy event anyway.
Why did I have so much trouble in the first place? My guess is that I did
something badly out of order on the first attempt, just as you suggest. I
had not noticed the guy in the cage at all the first few times, and went
through all the rest of the operation without having talked to him. So maybe
that's it: maybe going over and talking to the caged fellow early in the
sequence is necessary in order for everything to work properly.
Thanks for the help, and again, I appreciate your site and the other sites
you've linked to. I had no idea there was so much information and stuff on
MM9 on the Web. That's all good, as it gives the player confidence that he
can one way or another cope with whatever bugginess the game throws at
him--and I think Might & Magic IX really is worth putting up with a little
aggravation to play.

You would be surprised... UUNet gives me weekly & monthy access
statistics for my site, and MM9Hints.html consistently occupies the
top spot with ~3100 hits in June, and 500-700 hits per week so far in
July! From all the negativity in the press and on the forums you'd
think it should get about two hits per month...

You're right, I *am* surprised. And I think that level of interest is very
encouraging, too. Though I suppose it won't do much to revive NWC or keep
the M&M series alive. :-(
As long as there is that much interest in the game it will ensure continued
exchange of information and even unofficial fixes, anyway.

That's also probably why the game appears to be not selling well. I bought
mine brand new on eBay for $16.52, less than half the regular store price
here. And checking just today out of curiosity I see that seven more are
being auctioned there, five of them listed as new.

Thanks. That particular problem resolved itself (how or why I don't know),
but one of those editors may come in handy if something like this happens
again.
Seneca
I don't think it's junk, though it does seem much buggier than previous M&M
games, and as others have noted it appears to have been rushed out the door.
While not all the changes from previous games in the series are good ones,
most of them are real improvements.

Thanks, that may be useful if I'm hopelessly stuck because of a bug that
can't be worked around.
