Using a hex editor can be difficult with some games. I've heard about
an old DOS utility called "Game Wizard", which allows you to search
for "in-game memory variables" - you run Game Wizard and then you run
your old DOS game, so that both programs are in memory at the same
time. You then invoke GW with a "hot-key", and you can then search for
in-game variables such as "health" or "gold", etc.

The problem is that I think "Game Wizard" for DOS is no longer
available - probably for quite some time now.

As I think this old DOS utility has been "abandoned", and the authors/
company are unfortunately not in a position to profit from a sale,
does anyone know where I can get the registered Pro version? If not,
any other suggestions are welcome, such as just discussing the topic.

Well a lot of games have built in cheat codes so you could just search
the web for cheat codes for whichever game it is. Also sometimes the
pirate hackers who crack games will also make cheats for it and those
can be found in the usual places. Most older games you can take the
save file and search for values using a hex editor and hack it
yourself pretty easily. Some older games also had character editors
released for them way back in the day that you might can still find
somewhere on the nets. For example, all of the infinity engine (BG
series) games had character editors released for them that you could
edit save files and change your characters however you wanted to. And
by released I mean fan released, not Bioware or anything like that.
Fan web sites for a specific old game will be a good place to start
looking.

If you have a specific game you're trying to cheat in feel free to
post about it here, maybe someone knows something useful.

Am I correct in that you're only looking for such a program for DOS
games? You aren't interested in such a program for Windows games?

I think Knight37 is right ...also any old DOS utility like this
is going to
have to be got working on your presumably modern machine in ADDITION to the
old game....IMO you'll go mad with that....
& DOSBOX will walk out on you & complain Re: the over work.

Do you go to such Net sites as;
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/code/198812.html

or Gamecopy World:
http://www.wiretarget.com/games/gcw_index.shtml

They have Cheats & Various utility files for nearly every game ever.
(I've set that 1st gamefaqs link to STONEKEEP entry)
Or MegaGames here:

Ok I have a program on my DOS computer called Game Wizard 32.. Is that
what you want? I use its save state feature for games that don't let
you save whenever you want. You run it, then the game. You hit the
tilde key to access the game wizard menu. I don't have the installer
anymore but I do have the installed files. I am unsure if that will
work for you. I could rar them up and send it to you if you want to
try. Half a meg. You will need WinRAR to unrar it.
