I played Betrayal at Krondor a few years ago and enjoyed it but never got
very far. Now I've snaffled a free copy of the game from PC Gamer and I'm
stuck at the very same place again.
I'm trying to lay the ghost in Nia's Goods to rest. I've talked to the
Oracle and found Lysle, the guy who looks a lot like James. Lysle said he
sold a dead man's hand to someone named Glover in Lyton. I've been through
Lyton several times and can't locate Glover. I asked someone on another
newsgroup about this, and he told me that I would have to overhear about
someone buying a dead man's hand, then just knock on doors until I find
Glover. I've left and right clicked on everything in the tavern in Lyton
and overheard no such conversation. Do I have to order drinks or
something?
Also, can anyone give me some tips on how to beat the Rusalki on the road
to Sloop? I've been told that if you engage them in close combat, they
can't hit you with their magic. That's never stopped them before in my
copy of the game. Plus my weapons only seem to do one or two points of
damage when I hit them, which isn't often. I'm carrying a bunch of potions
and plants around with me. Will any of them work particularly well on the
Rusalki? I need help with a battle plan, some kind of edge.
Finally, how many of those Glazer's Guild seals will I need to get into
Romney? One for each guy? Should I take the extra one just in case? I'm
trying to keep space free. I had to dump a lot of useful stuff so I could
bring those six suits of armour to Lyton. Needless to say, it wasn't there
when I got back.

Just a small clarification. I presume you got the game off the latest
PC Gamer cdrom (June 97) but the "freeness" of it comes from Sierra,
not the oh so generous PC Gamer which charges for the cd. In fact,
BaK has been available free to anyone with internet access for the
last couple of months.

No, but you must first have spoken to Nia and the man in the Wayside
tavern or else Glover won't answer the door to his house when you
knock.

Rusalki have fairly high hitpoints and can be tough for players at
this stage unless you've trained your party to high stats. It helps
to have the spells Skin of the Dragon and Fetters of Rime. Blessed
swords are useful, as are weapon enhancers like Flame Root Oil,
Naphtha, and Clerical Oil Cloth. I think that they do less damage if
they are on adjacent squares and cannot use their range attack.

You only need one and only till you reach Romney. After you've
entered the town, it may be discarded.

Click on every house in town, one of the residents should tell you about
Glover.

Get better weapons? Still 1 or 2 points seems too low. Don't tell me you
are still using broadswords? Owyn should have some good offensive spells
by now so try those.

1 for the party.

My personal favourite is to use the Horn of Akron to summond
up beasthounds to keep the rusalki busy. Then have Owen
cast Skin of the Dragon on Gorath first & then James to keep
them safe. When I play, Gorath normally does greater
damage, since I've had him around for 2 chapters already to
build up his stats, whereas this is the first chapter for
James who is pretty poor-off in stats for a supposedly good
thief. Hope this helps.
Simon.

I didn't use Horn of Akron against the Rusalki (Mermaids in Russian, BTW).
I usually save it for the encounters where I'm vastly outnumbered or
Owyn is blocked immediately. I, like Simon, also used Skin of the Dragon but
if there are many of them (say, 5) I prefer casting full-power (cost: 20,
damage: 60) flamecast first; usually it kills the one it hits and badly
damages her neighbourghs. If I have an opportunity then after casting
Skin of the Dragon I use Steelfire (Rusalki have pretty high defense and
even good swords like Keshian Tapir can deliver as little as 10-12 damage
against them).
Did anyone try to use clerical oilcloth on the armor before attacking
Rusalki? I figured it might help but in my game I have no Rusalki left
to try.
_>Simon.
