I've been enjoying reading all the Wiz 8 posts, and I've started to learn
some of you guys' names. I'm curious, how is your party doing?

What level are you?
Where is your party located in the game world?
Are you satisfied with your party?
What would you change about your them, if anything?
Which class/race do you like best?
What are your guys' names and race/classes?
Any memorable battles?
Favorite spells?
Anything else you want to discuss ...

I'll start :) My guys are 11/12th level, and are currently in the mine area
(beyond the swamp). I am definitely satisfied with my party. I had some
Diablo II characters that I wanted to "import", and so for 3 of my guys,
they are 'old friends'. I have:

Bilbo - a hobbit rogue (creative name, huh? :)
Beowulf - A rawulf priest
Schindler - my human Lord (import of D2 paladin, named after Oskar
Schindler)
Victor - human fighter (import of D2 barbarian)
Zora - human mage (import of D2 sorceress)
Zim - mook ranger

The voices I chose for each of them fit perfectly, and I really enjoy them.
I really don't think I'd change anything about my party, except I might have
2 fighters instead of a lord & fighter. But that wouldn't fit with
Schindler's paladin class from D2 :)

As for favorites, schew, that's tough. My fighter is brutal, but only
up-close of course. My ranger is becoming Mr. Quigley Down Under with his
ranged attacks, just deadly! My rogue plays a very important role, and can
even deal some pretty serious damage when he backstabs with his Thieves
dagger. He's also fond of throwing powders. (At one point, I created a new
party and ran them through the monastary. The one thing I really missed was
not having a rogue.)

My mage is just "ok" at this point, but I suspect she'll be devastating
later on. She does have a great new non-combat spell now called "X-ray" that
is very handy! My priest has been a lifesaver more times than I can count.
He's constantly healing, and he casts Armorplate to get us beefed up for
battles, and now he's got the "Instant Death" spell, which when it works ...
woohoo!

Heaven help my party when my fighter goes insane. Once he did, and he killed
my Lord and Priest! What is the best way to deal with insanity?

The spell "sane mind". Or you can protect your party with soul shield which
doesn't prevent it but decreases the possibility that it will happen (or so
I've come to believe from its description).

Ah, ok. I do remember 'sane mind' now that you mention it. I chose "Instant
Death" for my Priest instead, and no kidding, it was in the very next fight
that my fighter went insane and killed two of my party members :-b
Fortunately I had a couple of Resurrection powders in my pack. I'll choose
sane mind next time my priest levels.

My party (level 15 or so):

- Og ("See creature!")
male lizardman fighter, was using Bloodlust for a while, then I
changed it for the Diamond Epee, which is almost as good and which
isn't cursed so he can switch to bow. Og is not the brightest candle
in the church, but I think he has a good heart.

- Olga ("Teyk this!")
female human monk. Seems to attack like 20 times a round. Tons of
kills. Sweet, uncomplicated (except for Mind Stab, of course).

- Luna ("Right ON!")
Val-girl rogue. The elf with the lank brown hair. I figure she's
like 19. She was pretty useless until I bought her a Thieves' Dagger,
now she does respectable damage. Opens chests.

- T'nek ("Wisdom go with you")
male Mook ranger. An island of sanity in the chaos that is my party.
Deadly.

- Dinah
Dinah is possibly my favorite character. The sadder-but-wiser
Southern belle, in my game a female elf cleric, the blonde. After she
gets resurrected, she says "I must look a mess." God, I love her.

- Aeriel ("Good riddance!")
female pixie mage, seems to have grown up somewhere around the Volga.
Acerbic, useful. But offensive magic isn't where it's at in this
game.

Ok heres my group :

Im around lvl 15 now and exploring Bayjin at the moment.

- Ssslar (Lizardman/Fighter)
- Taku (Felpurr/Samurai)
- Ulf (Dwarf/Priest)
- Elistan (Human/Mage)
- Galen (Fearie/Psionic)
- Eandor (Elf/Ranger)

My Fighter is with over 400 Kills really a killer ;)
Hes using Bloodlust with a Dragonkite Shield and hits hard.
My favorite one is my Psionic. With Speed 100 he often
gots the first move in the round. My Ranger is the
'I see something' guy and finds lots of hidden stuff
with his Scouting skill and is quite good with his Bow.
Favorite Spells: Depends on the enemy ;)
Souls Shield, Summon Elemtal, Elemntal Shield for Protection
Superman for support, Eye for an Eye, Haste
For the attck spells i use the ones where the monsters
got their lowest resistance.
At the moment the party workes good, dont know whats happening later in the
game

Toughest Batle for now was Nessie in the water caves.
But imanaged to kill him/her at the end.:)

I just finished the game. Here's my party as they were just before the
finale:

Q'uagan Dane (Q'uagan), 25th level Dwarf male fighter
Lor Vheesh (Lor), 25th level Lizardman male fighter
Yolinda Fangs (Fangs), 25th level Human female bard
Reyleahn (Reyleahn), 25th level Rawulf female priest
Haliford Hazelbottom (Hal), 24th level Gnome male alchemist
Caan ka el Achbator (Caan), 23rd level Mook male Psionic

Please excuse the silly names. :)

some item spoilers below...

Comments... let's see... well, my next party will contain neither a bard nor
a gadgeteer. Honestly, they seem a bit unbalancing. My bard did most of my
healing after she found the heal all dulcimer, as well as most of my mass
disabling with the insanity horn, then the pandemonium pipes, and finally
the nuclear blast horn and freeze all lute. I lucked out and chose a female
for the bard (a certain item that helps bards tremendously is female only)
so that maybe tipped the scales a bit, but even so, I believe to balance the
game a bit they should have maybe limited the number of times you could use
an instruments each battle, or maybe capped the spell power of the
instruments at a lower level. All I know is that with my bard the game was
nearly trivial after I found the heal all instrument (free total healing
after every battle and virtually unlimited total healing within battles),
and without her I would have had a much harder time of it. I never missed
having a mage much, but freeze flesh and freeze all are probably the two
best disabler spells in the game, and my psionic didn't do much, ever, so I
think the same party with mage substituted for the psi would be nearly uber,
without any sticky spots during the entire character development process
(other uber parties containing classes like the Bishop may end up more
powerful but are much more difficult at the beginning). I never had much of
a use for the mass nuke spells, unless they were free from my bard. They
cost too many spellpoints and don't do much damage. I'm not sure if the
game would have been more fun with more powerful nuke spells or not. As it
was, it added an element of tactics to combat that most games like this
lack.

Overall it was the most fun I've had with a game in a very long time.

About 10th/11th.

Leaving Marten's Bluff, heading towards the Swamp and eventually to the Mines.

>Are you satisfied with your party?

Pretty much.

Macbeth (Male Human Lord) - the cool Scottish voice, naturally
Kurei (Male Draco Samurai) - the thoughtful Asian mystic voice
Ghost (Male Rawulf Priest) - the standard-hero Kind voice
Chewie (Male Mook Ranger) - the low-pitch Intellectual voice
Lilith (Female Elven Gadgeteer) - southern belle
Kagero (Female Faerie Mage) - female Asian mystic voice

>What would you change about your them, if anything?

The Lord class is fairly disappointing so far - I'd remake him as a straight
Fighter. The Gadgeteer was disappointing at first, but now she rocks with her
Jack-in-the-Box, Duct Tape, and Forcefield Generator.

>Which class/race do you like best?

The Ranger is so incredibly valuable to the party, but a bit bland for some
reason. I just like the concept of the Draco Samurai, though. The Mage and
Priest are key for party buffs, ie Armorplate, Missile Shield, Enchanted Blade,
Magic Screen, etc.

>Any memorable battles?

Gregor, of course. I also love those massive hordes of random enemies
encountered in the wild, especially after my Gadgeteer Jack-in-the-Boxes 75% of
them away, and my Mage Freeze Fleshes the rest.

>Favorite spells?

Freeze flesh, Missile Shield, Scare.

>Anything else you want to discuss ...

A Bard would really be useful for this party. Bard + Gadgeteer == fun. Mage
direct damage is pretty feeble in most cases, but the status affectors are the
real gem. I wouldn't use a Faerie next time, though - there's just nothing
around that really fits them, armorwise.

The way I approached the character creation process was this:

1) Add up total stat points at the back of the book and write them in under
stats for each race. I used this as priority one.
2) Looked at the bonus points for class/race to start a character at the
beginning of the manual.

Between these two, I picked a couple of races then went in and judged which
of those races would make the best race/class combo while considering racial
bonuses.

What I ended up with (and it doesn't mean these are the best by any means
but it has worked very well for me):

Faery Mage
Human Bard
Felpurr Gadgeteer
Drakon Fighter
Rawulf Priest
Hobbit Rogue

We are 15th level now and pretty much wasting everything in our paths.

Can handle any threat and has all the defensive spells.

3 characters can cast party heal. 2 can cast cure insanity (Using Vi). Chaos
Pipes are great for crowd control. All go insane or get afraid. Followed by
use of the Port-O-Potty, all pretty much wait to die. Bard haste is nice
too. Fighting 30 monsters at once has never been as much fun.

Since the fighter often stands there doing nothing during the ranged combat
(using the cursed sword from the vault which prevents switching from close
ranged) he can breath acid. Rayjin and Dreadmares can't touch us with
soulshield and elemental shield in effect.

I knew I should've taken that left turn at Albequerque :) Where the heck is
Marten's Bluff? I left the big tree in Trynton and went straight to the
swamp, and stumbled on the mine area. I wonder if I should head back to the
Bluff?

Btw, when you get to the mine area, be prepared for wasps. Lots and lots of
them. There's a busted up cabin up the hill, I just sat in there (protected
on 3 sides) and fought wave after wave of them. It's as if they can smell
you from miles away. They just keep on coming.

Another tip: when you get to the swamp, you'll encounter lots of soldier
ants, and they'll always be accompanied by a Queen ant. Do yourself a favor
and ignore the soldier ants and go straight for the Queen, and don't stop
till she's dead. She can hit from a range and can cause insanity often. The
soldiers are puny, but she is dangerous.

Asian? I don't remember there being any Asian voices to choose from.

How do you handle the fatigue drain? My bard can only use a couple
instruments and then he has to recover fatigue somehow. Most of my
battles don't lst more than 4 or 5 turns so he rarely gets a chance to
do more than the first few.

Just curious, how is it not having a rogue or someone who can pick locks and
detect traps ? Do you pass up a lot of chests, or can you easily use the
knock-knock spell every time ? I'm really wanting to start over with yet a
new party (they're only 7 right now), with 3 magic wielding classes and 3
melee classes and no rogue/bard/ninja/gadgeteer.

Either give the bard the stamina potions or have a spell caster with the
stamina spell (or both, sometimes the caster is too busy keeping the front
line alive to worry about a fainting gadgeteer).

Ninja, because they're so versatile (albeit it takes a long time to develop
them) -- not to mention the coolness factor. No, not faerie ninjas;
personally I think it's cheesy to create characters based on knowledge of
what items can be found in a game.

Ah, that brings up another change I believe would be for the better. My
bard had several stamina recovery items equipped, and, about 75% of the
time, she would recover from being unconscious at the end of the round in
which she FELL unconscious... meaning she would lose turns very rarely. (To
play an instrument you only need a sliver of stamina, you'll get it off
successfully and then go to sleep.) I think they should have kept track of
the amount of negative stamina you have, and force you to recoup it all
before you wake up, or maybe only allow an action if you have all of the
stamina (or some sizable percentage of the stamina) required to perform it.

But to answer your queston, my priest's job was to ply my rogue with stamina
spells. In effect this allows high level spells which normally cost about
60 spellpoints to be cast for 14 (the cost of a max stamina spell) by two
characters. But priests don't do much other than healing in combat, anyway,
so it wasn't much of a compromise to sometimes not have her available to do
other stuff.

Also, don't neglect the stamina attributes of bards or engineers. Strength
and vitality are your best bets, since piety doesn't have any other good
effect for those two classes.

needless to say, got whipped really fast.

They were on one of the bridges to the next bough, so I had to go
through them. Did it by waiting for a group of four trynnies (150
to 200 hp) to come up the bridge and take on the front (and a lot of
crushes and whipping rocks). That was a really long fight with
trynnie spears vs body of stone, and lots of heals vs persistent
toxic clouds.

Magic screen, insanity, freeze flesh, slow (from snare of delay)

Works fine with Knock-Knock spell for Doors and Divine Trap
for Chests. Got 2 Items which give 20% base skill in Lock&traps
for my Ranger. With divine Trap working he got around 75% Skill
to work with. Sometimes needs 2 or 3 attepms to open the Chest.
Yet i didnt come along a Chest or Door that i didnt
manage to open ;)

I believe my party is roughly ... levels 12/13 ?

> Where is your party located in the game world?

Just got finished with Marten's Bluff, ready to head over to the Mines.

> Are you satisfied with your party?

Mostly. I'd say about 85% satisfied with my core party, and 50% satisfied
with my current selection of NPCs.

> What would you change about your them, if anything?

My Samurai. Although I really enjoy wearing and using 'samurai equipment',
he's really lagging behind my Lizardman Fighter in kills. The Lizardman
Fighter has the crazy cursed sword from Arnika's vaults and is sporting
roughly 300 kills. My Felpurr Samurai is sporting some pretty decent
weapons, but is lagging behind at about 100 kills.

> Which class/race do you like best?

In terms of functionality, I'd say the Mook Ranger. In terms of coolness,
I'm leaning towards the Felpurr Samurai.

> What are your guys' names and race/classes?

Ss'arr, Lizardman Fighter (chaotic voice, very cool)
Yuki, Felpurr Samurai (Asian voice)
CHUD, Mook Ranger (cocky voice)
Gaylord, Human Bard (gay voice)
D'Len, Rawulf Priest (calm and secure voice)
Brimstone, Fairy Mage (intelligent 'Mr. Spock' voice)

> Any memorable battles?

I heard a funny story about a battle that brought in an NPC from a nearby
store (probably Arnika). The NPC stood in-between a Ranger's arrow and a
targeted monster during the fight; and was hit critically for an Instant
Kill. That's priceless.

> Favorite spells?

Flesh Freeze
Whipping Rocks
Angel Tongue (Bard, Insanity)

> Anything else you want to discuss ...

I think I already covered quite a bit of ground in a different post under
this same thread.

Something worthwhile for adding is a feature I learned about on IronWorks's
Wizardry 8 Forum. Go into the Inventory screen, and then hold down the
'Control' key. Behold! ... Very impressive and useful too.

Wow, thanks for that tidbit. Very nice.

This is the party I'm playing with now:

Lizm, level 14 Rawulf Valkyrie
Merrin, level 14 Dwarf Monk
Rindemor, level 13 Faerie Ninja
Kent Dark, level 15 Human Gadgeteer
Mor'M, level 14 Mook Psionic
Serion, level 13 Elf Bishop

I'm in the Southeast Wilderness now, having just come from exploring
Marten's Bluff, Bayjin and the Sea Caves. The only retroactive changes
I'd make, if I could, would be to change my male gadgeteer to a female
one in order to use stamina regen necklaces, and to go back in time to
when I sold the Cane of Corpus (we were young, we needed the
money) and not do that!

My favorite character is currently the gadgeteer whose sex I would
change - the once-useless Omnigun has become a killing machine
with repeater and arrow attachments.

Memorable battles... taking on Don Barlone at level 7-8 and winning
after 40 rounds, taking on the Sorceress Queen + co. with almost
no mana and winning... falling out of Trynton(!) and "landing" in
the middle of 4 Rapax with only my Valkyrie alive... and surviving
(she who fights and runs away...).

No favorite spell, but Freeze All and Haste are the ones I use
most often.

1. Level 14/15
2. Mountain Wilderness. I have completed Monastery, Arnika, Trynton, Swamp,
Marten's Bluff,
Northern Wilderness, Southeastern Wilderness, Wilderness Clearing,
Mountain Wilderness
and the Mine Tunnels. I have allied with the T'Rang, but not done
their first quest yet.
3. Very satisfied.
4. No changes.
5. Faerie Ninja.
6. Galatea-Faerie Ninja (Cane of Corpus/Winter Wand)
Goliath-Rawulf Lord (Demonsbane/Diamond Eyes)
Sigmund-Elf Bard/Ranger (Eagle Eye Bow)
Shadow-Dracon Samurai (Fang/Enchanted Wakazashi)
7 of 9-Human Mage (Staff of Doom)
Xena-Human Bishop (Holy Basher)
7. Toughest battle-easily, the temple in the SE Wilderness- 2 Death Lords,
Sorceress Queen,
9 Cultists, 2 Earth Elementals, 1 Air Elemental, 1 Fire Elemental and
1 Water Elemental.
At the end Galatea was waiving her Cane over the remains of her
opponents and the 7
skeletons of her compatriots.
8. Elemental Shield and Soul Shield.

Regards,

Bob

I think having two fighters is also unbalancing (not to mention boring).
They are the best melee characters by far (I've tried samurai, and currently
have a 2 monks (including the robot). Now that I have Fang (a sword, for
those that don't know), the other characters pale in comparison. I still
like the critical hits and the fact that they do a bunch of hits per turn
though, although Fang has built-in critical hits... My party is currently
around level 16-17.

But you had a lot of fun, so to each their own. I do agree with your bard
assessment although my bard was male so I had to cast a lot of stamina
spells.

That battle was simply awesome. I had to restart a whole bunch of times.
The key was two tricks and some luck.

I used 2 canned elementals and summoned the one that I could (next time I
may try to bring as many canned elementals as possible). The other trick
was to start combat before the enemies would initiate it so I could start up
haste with my bard, and soul shield, as well as summoning the elementals.
Elemental shield followed after the mage summoned the elemental. Using this
strat I would still get smacked around or the elementals would die instantly
from (death cloud?).

The other key was to silence or make the cultists afraid/insane ASAP.
Surviving as many of the instant death attacks as possible also helped
(sometimes half the party was dead before I had done any damage to the
enemies at all). Luckily, the hastened elementals quickly charged the death
lords so they were busy attacking the elementals rather than casting the
nasty death/insane spells.

The best reward, of course, was Fang.

My party is almost the same as the default party with each character
recreated to my own preferences. The ranger does pretty much suck but I'm
too lazy to switch back between search and no search mode so his always-on
search suits my lazy, impatient playstyle.
