I've played a number of games over the years; but sadly have never played
the Ultima series. Will someone list the complete set of titles that are
connected with this series? I believe that it is 1-7, 7.5, 8, Martian
Dreams, Savage Empire, Serpent Isle, Silver Seed (or is this 7.5?). Also,
if anyone has the 1-6 CD and any of the others for sale, e-mail me to
discuss terms, etc.

Ultima 1-6
The Savage Empire
Martian Dreams (still the best, IMHO)
Ultima 7
Forge of Virtue
Ultima 7.5
The Silver Seed
Ultima 8
Ultima Underworld I
Ultima Underworld II

There was also a Game Boy game, Runes of Virtue (if anyone has a copy,
e-mail me, I'll buy it!), and an old VIC-20 release, "Ultima: The Ruins
of Mount Drash" or something. And maybe a few other obscure spinoffs
I've never heard of.

The games in the above list are the main ones, though.

There's also Ultima III and IV for Nintendo (if you can believe it)...

Right... I think there might even be me than that, actually, as FCI was
showing their in-progress SNES port of U7 at last Summer's CES. To the
best of my knowledge, though, the plot and such of the Nintendo versions
are the same as the original games...

From what I understand, there were some MAJOR changes to the SNES version of
U7. First of all, there is no party. You are traveling solo this time. Cheap
way to get around the annoying food thing. Also, Nintendo did some censoring
again. The murders in Trinsic don't happen. Instead, Christopher and the
Gargoyle have been kidnapped. There are probably some other changes also but
those 2 really suck.

I got the U1-6 series in a pack of CD's called The Ultimate Game
Collection for about 30 bucks. The pack had 7 CD's in it.

There was a VIC-20 Ultima game? Cool! Have you tried it? I still
have my VIC-20. Maybe I should look for it.

Right. The subtitle came around later (when the U1-6 series CD came out
they started calling it alternately The First Age of Darkness, based on
the U7 docs, and "The Beginning")
I'm fairly certain that originally, neither U1 or U2 had subtitles they
were just called "Ultima" and "Ultima II." The first one with a subtitle
I think was U3: Exodus. In fact, I vaguely remember being unsure whether
Exodus was part of the Ultima series back when it came out since all the
ads advertised the "Exodus" title and only mentioned Ultima in the small
print.

If you really rule, you'll find a copy of Akabeleth (I think that's the title),
the predecessor to Ultima 1.
Also, if you want the Complete Ultima 1 (heh), you have to get the ASM version
and the BASIC version.

The Nintendo versions are a shitload easier to get through, though. I had no
problem with the U4 port, but the original version had me pulling out my hair
at times. The SNES port of U7 will likely be crap, especially if they haul off
and turn everything into Mode 7...
Also, in the U7 SNES port, you won't get the ritual sacrifices and all of the
other neato bloody shit. That's what was best about the game, really. When I
first played U7 on my old 386, the ritual sacrifice made my eyes bug out. Of
course, I was playing with v1.0, so the game crashed a second after I saw the
ritual sacrifice.
Also, I'd imagine that the drug using, racism, and other things will be
toned-down for the port. U7 is simply too hardcore for a friggin' cart port.
Heh, I'd like to see what the Nintendo censors would do with Ultima 8 and its
ritual magic. :)

I wonder if Origin and Richard will let shit happen to such a wonderful magnum
opus. I hope not.

If there are any Origin people reading this, I petition you to try and keep the
SNES version off the market, because it's too watered down, and it will have
none of the impact of the original, and therefore none of the worth.

Well, it's my turn again. Thanks to a tremendous amount of help; I've
got the series straight and have ordered the 1-6 set. I believe that if
I order the U7 series CD and the Underworld 1-2 Cd; then U8, I should be
pretty close to completion. It seems that the hard task is going to be
in getting Martian Dreams and Savage Empires. Any suggestions?

Next question. What patches are going to be needed and where are they
located?

Where did you order the 1-6 set from? I just tried the 1-800# for EA, but
they said that it's not available anymore.

I actually bought Savage Empire and it has sat on my shelf collecting
dust ever since. It is NOT on CD-Rom though, but I will sell it really
cheap if you want it.

I also have the 1-6 CD, the Complete Ultima 7 CD, and have just sent my
U8 disks to origin for trade up to CD. When U9 comes out, it will be
nice to have them all on CD-Rom.
