I'm on the thieves quest. I can't open the strongbox in the merchants
house. When I try w/out picks it says NOTHING to me... when I try with
picks it says "that does nothing." am i left to assume this is an
electronic lock? what's the deal?

It's meant for theives, which mean you need a good lockpicking skill. Or
just the lockpicks.

Are you in combat mode at the time? If you are, then lockpicking won't work.

You'll need to get out of combat mode. If necessary, position yourself so that
the merchant runs out of the room and out of the building.

Personally, I had to remove about 20 (thats right, 20) traps before i could
pick the lock. I restored to a previous save so I could use all my Lvl skill
pts to put into the traps skill and it went much faster w/ a skill of 50.
Still took nearly 30 full mintues to de-trap the strongbox.

Unless you are a thief type char (in which case you probably wont have this
problem to begin with), don't bother w/ the Circle of Thieves and the
strongbox. All it gets you is 1000 xp and an electronic lock pick (which I
never used anyways). The dialogue options w/ the leader of the thieves is
funny, but thats about it.

I remember being very frustrated on this one. And as I recall, it was
simply
a matter of interface. I believe that if you select the Lockpicking
skill from the menu and then select the strongbox, it opened. I never
got it
to work using the lockpicks(electronic or otherwise). A very picky
interface
goof if you ask me ...

Nope, you also pick up $3,000, which is a nice sum of money. And what
is wrong with 1,000 points of experience? There are a number of
things you can do that earn you less - such we skip those also? :)

Besides the traps aren't really a problem. Go ahead and open the box
and let it explode. It usually does less than 10 points damage anyway
- and one stimpack will handle that. No big deal. The only trap that
I have found to be a problem is the one at Doc Morbid's - and even
then, if you have enough hit points, it's no big deal - you just can't
get into the locker as it is destroyed.
