1. The game makes the sound and lighting effects which usually accompany a
successful spell (as in Gothic 2).
2. My mana is not depleted.
3. The scroll is still there.
4. The scroll doesn't work, and there are no on-screen warnings explaining
why I can't use it.
Am I supposed to do something special in Gothic 1 before I can use a scroll?
I've noticed in my character stats screen it says "Magic: no." Is this
significant? The manual doesn't describe this screen at all.
I fear I won't be able to finish the game unless I figure this out.
Thanks.
Are you holding the keys/buttons long enough, until the effect of the
spell takes place?
To be honest, I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but give
it a try.

That was it! Yeah, I was used to the Gothic 2 way of spellcasting and didn't
realize I had to let the spells charge. The manual doesn't say anything
about that either.
Many thanks to you and the other person who responded!

But in Gothic 2, you have to hold down the key until the spell is cast
also, right? The spells go slightly faster in Gothic 2, especially
the teleports, but none are fast enough that you don't hold down the key.
