I Don't know what to do next...

When you kill the Summoner a portal should appear.

teleporter pads do not lead to summoner sometimes, search every nook and
cranny for him
if you havent killed him level is not clear
I cleared out everything once and teleporter pads did not lead to him, had
to go over and up

1) Find "The Summoner". He's in there somewhere, though you may have
to "solve" the teleportation maze to find him (then again, he could
be in a different direction).
2) Kill "The Summoner". Leap Attack, drop a golem on him.. what ever.
3) Read his Journal. It is right next to him on the podium.
4) Step through portal. The portal will appear after you read the book.
5) Activate waypoint. It is right next to where the portal exit is.
Then you're on your way...

When you step through the gate and find the waypoint, you can go in four
directions.
1. A maze with lots of portals.
2. A maze with many stairs but no platforms or portals.
3. A maze with only straight corners, with lots of traps.
4. A maze with both platforms and stairs. You'll always find the summoner
here.

Really? Then it is random after all. I've played several games and the
summoner always was in type 4. I thought he had to be there since the
journal is on a platform, and there are no platforms in the other three
kinds (I think).

It's clear, but unfortunately it's also incorrect - I've been through the
arcane sanctuary 3 times (once with a barbarian, once with an amazon in
normal and once with the same amazon in nightmare), and each time the
summoner was in a difference direction (1,3 and 4 on your list). It's
definitely random.
