How do you use this spell?

I have all the detect spells. When I cast them, nothing happens that I can tell.

What are they and where did you get them? I haven't seen any for sale
in the Mage's Guild and they are not listed in the manual. If you got
them from a spellmaker, please let me know because I would be
interested in using them - especially "Detect Bugs" :-)

They are in the Spellmaker. When I cast one of them (Detect monsters,
I think) my compass arrow jumped around, and I supposed it was acting
as an indicator and was having difficulty pinpointing a target. Since
then I have read posts indicating that Bethesda says none of the
Detect spells work.

I believe the compass arrow jumps around when there is nothing in
range. Otherwise it points in the direction of the closest thing
it detects. The only one I've used much is DETECT ENEMY. It seems
to work fine, although it's usually not worth the points. I used
this spell early on in Castle DF. Notice a couple of the guards
are always your enemy, this is how they keep you from sleeping
in the throne room. If you try to start a conversation with one
of these guards they will promptly attack you. The other guards
just ignore you. One time I have found this spell useful is when
you go to loiter and can't because there are enemies near and
they never show up to attack you because they are stuck in a wall
or immobilized (e.g. wraithes out after sunrise in DF). Another
time was after most monsters had been cleared out of a dungeon,
but keep in mind there may be parts of a dungeon you can never
get to (without entering the void) that have monsters in them
within range. I tried DETECT TREASURE once in a dungeon when
I couldn't find the quest item I was looking for and had
cleaned most everything out. It seemed to be pointing to a cage
with a collapsed skeleton (not a monster) in it. I couldn't
get any treasure out of it (couldn't see any to get either).
Sometimes it is difficult to tell just where the pointer is
pointing when you are in a multi-level structure such as a
dungeon or building, because it does not appear to restrict
itself to the current level (although I have no objection with
this aspect). I really haven't used DETECT MAGIC, because I
haven't thought of a good use for it yet.

They'll attack you even if you just identify them! Must
have had a poor childhood or something.
