When in doubt, save your game, ready the item, and dump some skill
points into that area. If your attack bonus increases, you got the
right one. Reload if you didn't want to spend the points there after
all.

Halberd is spear. On paper the elite halberd in two hands does the
most damage in the game, but in practice any of the high-level two
handed weapons are within a few points of each other. Nice thin about
spears is you can use them in one hand and use another weapon(like a
sword) in the other. This seems to be the way to get the largest
damage number, don't know about attack speed effect though.

The manual states something like "all blades mouted on a staff" falls under
the "spear" category...
So I guess that halberds are spear...
Of course, I would also like to have this confrimed...

It is a spear. Another surefire way to check is to give the item in question
to someone without the ax skill but with the spear skill. If he can hold it,
it is a spear, etc.
