Well, I admit it...I was biased against the Ultima Underworld series
for a long time. I really dislike Wolf 3d and I hate (blashpemy?) Doom
and I figured Underworld would be a sort of "Ultima Doom 3D"...well, I was
wrong and I'm big enough to admit it to the world :)
So, one day I found the EA Classics edition...after a few adventures
in installing, I got it up and running and playable off CD...very nice!
Having just completed UW1 last night, I can honestly say...geeze, what
a GREAT game! I finished SI not long ago and the frustrations due
to numerous bugs, the linearity and so forth really got to me...well,
UW was a breath of fresh air! The 3d view is impressive...lots
of detail, and it's really smooth.
Just exploring is incredible...I remember one room where I was on the
'floor' and up above there were little windows or something, and these
green slimy things were -jumping- off to attack me! Great realism!
Gave me shivers at times.
This game is no Doom..you need a brain. If you run around and kill everything
you won't get very far :) Lots of puzzles to solve, and best of all, it's
non-linear! For an underground hell-hole, there is a -lot- to do, lots of
interesting people (and things) to meet. The combat was a little too
arcade-ish for me at first, but in reality it isn't that bad. It is similar
to Ultima-8 in that it is real-time combat, but it's a lot more realistic
than U8 ever was...there was a fair bit of acrobatics to do as well, but
jumping was also a lot more sane than U8. Actually, UW and U8 can't
even compare..UW is better. More plot, better interface, faster, and -fun-.
Well, anyway, I'm not going to rant on about it any more...I just wanted
to say to anyone sitting on the fence wondering about UW...go for it!
It's well worth the money! It's been a long time since I've enjoyed
an RPG as much as this one...I'm just starting UW2 and I hope it meets
my expectations.
(Incidentally, there was a strange bug in the game...when I was going
for the key of Courage, whenever I'd enter a certain level an error would
come up in the message scroll saying "Internal error; problem with
object list" or something similar. Didn't affect gameplay though, I still
beat the game no prob. That's a lot more robust than being booted to
an ugly C:\> prompt like U7 and SI were wont to do.)
PS--I notice in UW2 credits that Bill Johnson is credited as the voice
of the Guardian again...but I haven't heard any voices at ALL in UW2..
is something misconfigured, or do the voices come in later?
-Kev, who thinks the Guardian saying "No, no! You must -not- do that!" would
make a great Windoze startup sound... :) :)

There are several WEB/FTP sites that have the fix programs for UW 1&2.
"Tims Place" on the WEB is a good start point to find hard/software,
gameing, mfg addresses, and cheat/crack info. Point your WebCrawler
search at "Games Cheat" and you'll find several other places.

The only voice in the game is the Guardian, who speaks to you occasionally
in a dream when you rest. (Well, actually, he taunts you...)
