1) I'm attempting to get Dark Master before light master and am also
trying to avoid killing innocent people. I'm level 25 and started in
Free Haven. I made a quick jaunt to White Cap to get Dark Expert (I
hate Harpies!). Since it is also Dec, I thought I'd head over to
Silver Cove, due the druid promotions even though I don't have a
Druid. Does doing these promotion quests raise reputation and
experience? I need the experience, not the reputation. Anyway, I
figure I need to train up to level 30 to a) get enough skill points
for Dark Master and b) give myself a fighting chance in Paradise
Valley. So, assuming I'm lvl 30, I plan on donating to the temple of
baa, selling bones, threaten some kind peasants and maybe hire a
pirate, rustler, whatever to get some negative reputation. I might
also try to complete the price fixing quest but I don't think I have
the kahunas to attempt this yet. Anyway, I figure I'll be notorious
after this. If not, a villager may have to mysteriously disappear.
Now, my plan is to fly into blackshire then into Paradise Valley
(hugging the ridge line along the mountain range that runs parallel
to the road). I think I can get to the town that the Dark Master
resides in, but I understand there are Titans about. I further
understand that I might be able to do some serious damage with Meteor
Shower and Starburst, possibly even shrink ray? In any event, once I
get Dark Master, I can Lloyd's beacon the hell outta there, donate at
some good temples, then complete some quests to get back to good or
honorable rep. I'm purposely holding off on promotion quests just so
I have enough to get to saintly. Is this plan workable? If not,
what modifications are necessary?
2) I had 2 NPCs - Merchant (+6) and Instructor (15% exp.). I traded
the Merchant for a teacher (10% exp.) thinking that I'll get to a
higher level faster and thus staying one step ahead of the monsters.
Problem is, I only have 1000 gold (another reason to do some minor
quests before trying the Dark Master thing). Which would you take,
+6 merchant or the teacher?
Thanks, Juardis T.
You get Experience and the Title which will allow you to train to Master in
some skills.

I had no luck with shrink ray....to be honest, I didn't have luck with Titans
til the much higher levels. Save when you enter Paradise valley, then fly in
and run like mad into all the buildings til you find him. (I believe he's on
the outskirts of town, along the southern border)

2 or 3 council quests done in a row with a respectable rep will get you to
angelic...rent a Bard then to get to Saintly. What I'm saying is that it's
fairly easy to get to Saintly...staying that way...well that's the hard part
<g>.
> Which would you take,<BR>

I used a Duper/Banker or a Duper/Instructor
Duper gives plus 8 to merchants skill. It's supposed to lower your rep one
notch, but never happened to me.
Banker is plus 20 percent gold. They take 10.
Instructor is plus 15 percent exp. They take 7 percent.
It's a novel idea, not wanting to kill anyone, but seems your only playing at
evil....you'll never know the joys of devastating a town after the peasants
have spent months getting in your way. I can't be bothered with yelling at them
all the time. Take out New Sorpigal....it regens in 6 months...plus you'll most
likely kill everything else on the map with your first Armageddon. (depending
on your skill level)

So, you are not planning on getting Light mastery first? If not, why
not? I think lvl 30 is too low to handle Paradise Valley, even just
to get to the dark master. Yes, Titans don't like Meteor Shower very
much, but you'll have to face 5 or 6 of them right in Paradise Valley
to get to the master. While I'm sure this can be done, the real
problem is that the temple to heal has a whole mess of hydras around
it as well as a few titans. That area will be hard to clear at 30.
I suppose you can do it with a lot of beaconing back and forth, but
it'll take some effort. However, if you complete a bunch of the
council and promotion quests first, then you won't have to worry about
getting your rep back up (you can only get to respectable by donating)
and you'll probably have a few more levels to work with.
My opinion is that you're in a bit much of a hurry to get dark
mastery. You won't need it to complete a lot of the quests (the
price-fixing one is easy, btw) so I would wait until I became a bit
more powerful. Your plan probably will work but it'll probably be
more frustrating than it has to be, IMO.

Most people change them often for the situation. If you have a
magic-heavy party, though, I would definitely have a spell master
before going into Paradise Valley; you'll need it.

Doing the price fixing quest for Loretta Fleise in Silver Cove will lower
your reputation. Doing the Druid quest will raise it.

You'd do better to follow the road. The Obolisk and a Baa temple are both
located along that ridge line and are heavily guarded by hydra and titans.
And then once you get to town there are another dozen or so titans.
(Beware the death-casting [not "finger of death", just DEATH) of the supreme
titans.) However once you get there you'll find an armor store that will
sell gold plate armor and a weaponer who sells +12 swords. As well as the
Dark master and the Ancient Weapons master.
If you want to get some experience before attempting this without actually
doing useful quests you could clear out the Shadow Guild hideout in White
Cap, Agar's Laboratory in Blackshire and the Dragon Riders cave in
Blackshire. (Beware wyrms in the dragon riders cave, tho.)

I cast it twice, and made a tiny (about 1/8th - 1/16th damage) dent in
the Hydras, but not a single point to the Titans. I was an DM Expert
level 16 at the time, Character Level 66. What is it with this game?

Nothing is wrong. Big monsters tends to have higher magical resistance, so
spells might not have the full effect on them. The really tough monsters
often have complete immunity to certain spells - as stated before, titans
and gold dragons are immune to armageddons. Titans, for instance, are also
immune to star burst. But fire-based spells (e.g. meteor shower) and most
other dark spells (toxic cloud, shrapmetal, dragon breath) are effective
against titans. I cleared Paradise Valley and Hermit's Island of titans
almost exclusively by bombing them with meteor showers (3 fire masters) and
strafing them with bows (all 4 are masters bow).
Cheers,

I only meant that it seems odd that by the time my party can use
armegeddon effectively, I'm up against monsters that are immune to it, so
the spell becomes worthless. That seems like a repetitive theme
throughout the game in a way.

Same tactic worked for me, with my 2 fire masters and 4 master archers. I
just think that Dark Magic should be more effective than elemental,
considering it's late introduction into the game and high cost. In most
cases it's simply not. Speaking of which, I keep reading about the
wonders of shrapmetal, but I get the same exact effect most of the time
with fire blast...

Shrapmetal is nice because it works even on those monsters
that are immune to other magic. Shrapmetal (like Implosion) does
physical damage, making Diamond Gargoyles the only creatures in the
game immune to it.

An example of Shrapmetal usage: Fly over a dragon/drake/whatever, hit return
when you are on top of it, then hit "home" and position yourself in a way so
the dragon fills the whole screen. Then cast shrapmetal with 3 characters,
kills a gold dragon in a round. Of course, it helps to have Dark magic at
something like 25 (+ extra levels from items and spell master) :-) It kinda
hurts to get hit 7 times and eat 30+ spell levels of damage / hit.
The best (damage) spells in game are Shrapmetal, Dragon Breath, Implosion,
Meteor Storm and Stardust, you most likely don't need anything else.
