Diablo 2 hotkeys not workin

only diablo groups that google carries seem to have barely any posts
in them.
I recently picked up an old copy of Diablo 2 and the Lords of
Destruction addon. Everthing works fine except for hotkeys to my
skills. They just plain don't work. In the config screen i think it
has up to 15 different skill hotkeys and even a next/previous skill
hotkey. i've tried remapping them to many different keys and not a
single time has it worked. My level 10 character has at least 4
different selectable skills which i tediously change using the mouse
pointer every time. Hotkeys are needed.
Anyone ever experience this and possibly have a solution?

I never could assign hotkeys to the *left* button. It just won't work.
Can you explain how it is done?

There are two icons displaying the currently-assigned skills at the
bottom of the screen. Click on the left side one to assign hotkeys to
the left mouse button; click on the right side one to assign hotkeys to
the right mouse button.
