I've been playing it all 3-day weekend, and about 2/3rd of the way
through. I'd have to give it a thumbs up at this point. It is
definitely an Action/RPG just like BG: Dark Alliance, and in
comparison I'd have to say it's no better than that anyway, very
similar, and probably significantly less good.
The Bad: There's not much story (or choice) too it, but then there
never is in these action/rpgs. There's way too much swearing (f-word
practically every sentence) in what little dialog there is. Other
than the character selection screen the music is poor and not fallout
at all, which is either not noticeable or jarringly incongruous.
Character development choices seem to be extremely superficial and
hardly impact the game at all, and characters seem to be very
similar. Stupid pointless insta-death bottomless pits all over the
freeking place.
The Good: Blowing away hordes of mutants & radscorpions with a combat
shotgun still feels pretty darn good. It's a Post Apocalyptic setting
even if you don't think it's Fallout, which is pretty rare. If you
can overlook it's flaws it's a nice little nearly mindless game. Two
words: Meat-Cannon.

Go post that on NMA and watch them go berserk.
Hehe, that might be fun. I've been checking that site for years as my
main Fallout news source, pretty much since Fallout 2... I just read
their 'Glittering Gems of Hatred" article, quite a lot of good points
there.
I consider myself a pretty rabid fallout fan (there are no better
CRGPs!), but I'm a bit more forgiving I guess. Yes furry deathclaws
surprised me but they explained it in game so I didn't really have an
issue with it (Fo:T), and the game is probably the only pausable turn
based game that really works that I've played, so I don't see their
point about it being broken.
I don't really see the setting problems with Fo:BoS. Yes I would
greatly prefer a Turn Based RPG with a story, and real character
choices and path choices than an Action game, but hey it's in the same
setting, and it's not bad.
I guess there is hope I'll even like "Oblivion with Guns" since I like
Fo:BoS.

Jagged Alliance fans may disagree with you ;-p

Nostromo
Yes, excellent game!
I maybe finished one third or one half of the game... City with zombies I
think... I beat some bosses. The one who leaves bombs was fun and hard :)
Mario
Yeah, but if you don't toe the party line and salute the author they
go apesh*t. I agree with a lot of it too but it also mentions that
Fallout 2 was barely acceptable. WTF? Fallout 2 was 10x better than
Fallout 1 albeit buggier.

I suspect I wouldn't like it but then I don't have a console that it
runs on so I will never know. I like tactics a lot as a tactical
combat game because it fixed a lot of the problems with Fallout 1/2's
combat which was by far the weakest part of the game. I wasn't
expecting Fallout 3 Lite which seems to have irked a lot of other
fans. That and the furry Deathclaws ("OMG! The mutant monsters
aren't pure! They are abominations!") :-)
Er, I meant pausable real-time, sorry.
> Jagged Alliance fans may disagree with you ;-p
I played Jagged Alliance years and years ago, I don't remeber it as
being pausable real time. I never got in to it much though so my
memory could be off.
- Justisaur
I don't know that I'd say 10x better, but it was clearly better.
Maybe 2x better :) O.k. if you actually compared the times I played
through the games Fallout 2 was 10x better. ;) The story was better
in 1 (dogmeat!), but the combat, game play, and character creation was
greatly improved in 2.

Again if you compare the times I played through... Tactics was as good
as 1. I played all the way through 2x, once with only pausing as if
it were turn based, and once real time, as it was almost a totally
different game. I do note that playing through with the pausing took
about 4 times as long, and it did seem frustratingly slow at times.
It takes a pretty damn good game for me to play it all the way through
more than once.
I'll often start to play a game through a 2nd time but never finish.
A lot of RPGs I will start a bunch of different times trying out
different things and only complete once, so it can be a good game and
I'll only play it once. but 2ce? Almost unheard of. It makes the
short list
Master of Magic
Master of Orion 2
Fallout 1
Fallout 2
Fallout: Tactics
Star Control 2
Street Fighter 2
GTA: Vice City
.... I think that's it. I think those are the only games I've played
all the way from start to finish more than once in 30+ years of
gaming.
Of course there's a lot of games that don't really have an ending, or
they just repeat only harder.
- Justisaur
Yeah he's by far the hardest I've encountered. The game seems to get
considerably easier after getting to LOS with the ghouls. I'm still
having fun with it, but it's not much of a challenge anymore.
