Hi, I’ve been out of the video game loop for awhile. I’m looking for
recommendations for video games that I can play on a laptop PC with a
1.6GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 64MB of video RAM, and Windows XP.

• Ideally I’d like games that I can play with just the keyboard and
mouse and no other special equipment like a joystick.
• I like turn based games that allow you to think about each move
during combat and rely less on fast hand-eye coordination.
• I have played most of the early Ultima and Final Fantasy series and
enjoyed them.
• The games can be old or new. I’m budget conscious and older games
are cheaper.
• I tend to like your classic fantasy or sci-fi genre games, but I’m
open to other suggestions.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
John

IMO Its that only 64MB Video Ram that's the main limitation.
I'd guess that nothing released since (say) 2000 has a chance of working.
Sounds as though you have not been gaming for many years sooo...
So perhaps RPG's Diablo , Planescape Torment (one of the best ever)
the 1st 2 Fallout games...Neverwinter Nights 1st one ..Baulders Gate

MJB: I ran the following RPG games or tactical-style games with RPG
elements on a lesser desktop system (800 mhz P3, under 1gb ram, win 98) than
you describe but with a very good 64 mb video card:

Arcanum
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Daggerfall
Deus Ex
Diablo II & LOD
Fallout 1 & 2
Fallout tactics
Jagged Alliance 2 Gold
Half-life
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale 2
Mafia: City of Lost Dreams
Might & Magic 6, 7 & 8
Morrowind GOTY edition
Neverwinter Nights (plus both expansions)
Outcast
Planescape: Torment
Sea Dogs

That's just the games that weren't turn-based strategy or purely
first-person shooters or flight / sports sims. And on a couple of the above
titles my system didn't match the minium specs but they still played just
fine - I did have to crank all the 'shiney bits' way down to 'dull' though.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. This is a good working list.
As I have gotten older I find that I get the biggest bang for my
gaming dollar from older games.

• If people are still talking about a game years after it was released
it must be pretty decent.
• Well designed games with a good story or plot structure behind them
work well with the hardware that was available at the time they were
released.
• The price of games drop dramatically after they have been out for
awhile.

Actually, the first three Fallout games (1, 2, Tactics) may also available
at your local software shop (as Fallout Trilogy).

Since Bethesda, the current owners of the franchise, are raising a stink
over its appearance on the retail shelf, I'd say grab it while you can.

Good luck.

Planescape: Torment

You may not like it to start with I didn't, invest a couple of hours, once
you get into it no game has come close to beating it for story and
narrative. What Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard and The Third Man are to film,
this is to games, a true, timeless classic.

Fallout is free:

Of course you can't install any of the mods with that version, but you
can't beat the price for one of the best rpgs ever.

I'd add a couple more to that list. Jagged Alliance (any of the series)
and maybe Icewind Dale.

They never did release 'Firewind Chip', did they? ~_^

Then again, I could have posted about 'The Full Monty'. X3
