Can someone please explain this King's Quest 6 riddle, I already
know the answer to it but it doesn't make sense though...

here's the riddle:

My first is foremost legally, my second circles outwardly,
my third leads all to victory, my fourth ends twice a nominee.
My whole is this gate's only key.

the answer: love

does that make sense to you? I can't seem to make the
connection between riddle and answer. Oh I got through the gate
and all, but I'm still confused by this riddle. Can anyone here
explain this weird riddle?

Ron

L is the first letter in "legally"; O circles; V first letter of
"victory"; two e's in "nominee";

Yes it is a strange riddle, but the first letters of the words: Legally,
Outwardly, Victory and Ends spell the answer: LOVE, so I guess this is
the only connection, other than that I think it is supposed to make no
sense whatsoever (it's supposed to be unanswerable).

Pete.

Sure it makes sense. The letter 'l' is the foremost letter of the
word 'legally.' The second letter, 'o' circles outwardly from its
center. The third letter, 'v' leads to the word victory, because it's
the first letter. 'e', the fourth letter, appears at the end of the
word 'nominee' twice. Combined, they form the word 'love', which is
the answer to the gate's riddle.

My first is foremost *l*egally, my second circles *o*utwardly,
my third leads all to *v*ictory, my fourth ends twice a
nomine*e*.

My whole is this gate's only key.

The other answers are correct, but there is also a more in-depth meaning in each part of the clue:

-Love is "L"egally defined by marriage
-Love, when shared, circles "O"utwardly to others around the source
-Love for someone or something will lead a person to a more profound "V"ictory than any other reason such as avarice, malice, power, etc.
-Love between two people usually ends with procreation, therefore twice ending with a nomin"EE" to continue on the lineage.

I loved this game when I was a kid. I know this post is over 20 years old, but I've read the simplified versions of this answer all over the internet yet I've never seen anyone try to explain it, but I could be wrong; it has happened before.
