So, is Daggerfall worth it?

I am playing the demo. Still in the first dungeon, stuck, of course. I
have traveled it three times without finding exit or kidnapped person.

I see many people complaining and a few people supporting. Does anyone
like this game?

Is anyone playing it "successfully"? Without extreme frustration?

Does anyone like playing it?

I am trying to decide whether or not to buy it.

I can see what people DON'T like about it. What does anyone LIKE about
it?

Thanks,

Jay

In article <32DBFD...@compuserve.com>,

What I like about DF is that it gives me the feeling I'm playing the mainhero
in a fantasy story. I'm not interested in getting all the minor quests done,
nor in how to get the job done the fastest way possible. I want to find out
a lot of the way things are in Tamriel. With a little imagination you'll get
the feeling all the nobles are trying to use you to get their schemes done.
If you get that feeling, you are _in_ the game.

Greetings,
Martin

P.S. I'm quite sure I could also get this feeling with a text-rpg too, and
compared with that, Daggerfall has great graphics and fantastic sounds.

I played Daggerfall for almost four months. It's a great game. Most
people were frustrated because of the bugs. I never let the bugs bug
me. I was one of the fortunate ones who must have had a computer
configured the way DF liked because I had what I would call, minimal
crashes. I got through the game using patch 177... I did not apply
subsequent patches because of the rumors that it caused even more
frequent crashing.

The other thing people seemed to hate were the huge dungeons.
I liked the big dungeons. Very early on I came up with a method of
keeping track of where I was in the dungeons and after that, I was
never lost. (E-mail me if you are interested).

If you want more specific information on the game, e-mail me.

Many, most of us prefer playing it over whining about its failings. It *IS*
flawed, and frustrating at times, so your mileage may vary. It's not perfect,
it's not that bad, it's a matter of what you like and you don't.

>Is anyone playing it "successfully"? Without extreme frustration?

I am playing it, and keep going back to it despite the eventual frustration
moments. I don't think I'll give up before I finish it, and moreover, I think
it has some re-playability potential (after some time away from it, at least).

>Does anyone like playing it?

Yeah. Just be prepared to patch it once a month at the very least. Well at
least there are patches.

I am of the opinion that Bethesda should have never released it in as buggy
state as it was. It's much better now, but has still some serious bugs to fix.
In spite of that, you question was whether we like it, and I think that's the
only sensible approach. I like it. You may like it too, then again you may not.

I suggest you check Daggerweb (http://reba.cei.net/daggerweb),
you'll find a lot there, including: FAQs, game information, bug information,
tools, people's feedback (positive and negative), a message board and live chat.

Great game! I get bored with most computer games quickly, but I've been
playing Daggefall since October and I'm not bored yet. The bugs so many
people whine about are minor and easy to avoid (if you've installed the
patches). I can see how some people might get frustrated or bored with the
long dungeons, but I like them and I feel immersed in them. I find them
much easier than the complex mazes in Bard's Tale.

Most of us who like the game don't post here much. The whiners and losers
post a lot. Ignore them, the rest of us are enjoying this game.

True. With the latest patch of DF there is not much left to complain
about. If you do not like the Ultimas that much (please do not hurt me,
you may play DF even if you love Ultima , stays the same to me)
and want some action in a role playing game, DF is (at the moment) the
choice for you.
Are there any plans for a sequel?

I also am enjoying the game a lot. It is a great remake of the pen and
paper RPG like DnD. Its and open world where the character can follow any
path he/she wants. With so many lands, dungeons, quests, and
characters...you could play a looong time and not repeat any sequence for
months/years. My only complaint is that there is no DETECT SECRET DOORS
spell. It would make the dungeons much more bearable.

If you look at the automap from above, you can frequently see the

I think that is probably true. I suppose I too ought to add my name to
the silent majority. I have been playing the game some part of probably
five days out of seven since it came out in the UK and am still enjoying
every minute of it.

I have played and enjoyed many RPGs including the Ultima series, but
never have I experienced a game that gave me so much freedom to do what
I want in a "virtual environment" and take up or leave the main quest
as and when I like, to develop my character in interesting ways and even
to design my character in exactly the way I want (obviously within limits)
but those limits are wider than anything else I have experienced.

There are bugs, but they are in my opinion relatively minor, and the game
will occasionally crash. But I was always brought up to play role playing
games by saving often and therefore the odd crash isn't a problem.

I shall be playing the game for a long time yet (at least until Ultima IX
comes out) but until then I can't wait for TES 3.

It is easy to escape from the first dungeon. When you reach the great
room with high stairs, you have to climb on the throne, activate the
wooden stick beside the throne. It will lead you to a higher floor.
keep your right and you'l find a room that lead you outside!|

I do. Once you know how to threat the program, you're ok.

I'm continuing to play after completing it. If you like dungeon-bashing a la
Moria/Larn/Hack, Daggerfall is great.

Secret doors all show up on the automap. What more could you want?

Well, the demo is not much more than a dungeon as far as I know.
In the real game you have to trudge thru a lot of laaaarge dungeons
to win the game. I for one am in no haste to win the game! I like
the beautiful slow sunsets, the rustic houses, the colorful clothes
and the swaying hips of the townswomen ... the chirping of birds at
night, the open woodlands of the great outdoors ... I like to run
with the wind, rest in the open and fight the occasional werewolf
and zombie and things that go bump in the night ... climb the city
walls late at night to balance at the top of the wall, looking out
over town as the red glow of morning breaks forth and townspeople
burst out on the streets.
Oh, an occasional dungeon, sure. Preferably not part of a quest,
though, just ducking in and collecting the armor of a dozen unlucky
thugs to boost my bank account ... :)

>I see many people complaining and a few people supporting. Does anyone
>like this game?

Yes, I do. Actually I'm pretty close to loving it.

>Is anyone playing it "successfully"? Without extreme frustration?

Yes. With extreme pleasure.

>Does anyone like playing it?

>I am trying to decide whether or not to buy it.

I am not in any way employed by or affiliated with Bethesda. :)

>I can see what people DON'T like about it. What does anyone LIKE about

I like the fact that there are hundreds of towns and villages of every
size from a couple of farmhouses to a full-scale capital. Guilds and
quests so different that they should appeal to a very varied public.
You can go heal the sick on behalf of a temple or kill a nobleman on
behalf of a dark brotherhood. Guard a sleeping mage or trawl a huge
dungeon. Make your own spells, potions, magickal weapons ...
there are simply so many ways to play that one of them should fit
you. Unless you're tightly focused on winning in the shortest time,
which sort of ruins any gameplay in my humble opinion.
