Please forgive a technical question. How do I get Ultima 7 to run under
Windows 98? I'm sure this problem has been thoroughly addressed
somewhere, so if there is a FAQ somewhere, I'd appreciate it if you could
direct me there. Seems everytime I get a new computer (286, 486,
now Pentium) I've got to spend days trying to discover the secret to get
my Ultimas to run. So far, Commodore 64 was the easiest.
Thanks,
Steve

Like this:

http://users.wantree.com.au/~rsd/ultima7.htm

A word of warning: if you don't have a genuine Soundblaster card like
SB16 or AWE32 (which can play sounds in DOS games without loading DOS
drivers), expect to have lots of problems trying to get the sounds,
mouse, MOSLO and smartdrv to run at the same time (too little memory).

The reason I specifically mention smartdrv is because without it
saving or loading a game can take several minutes, but with it only a
few seconds. Relieves your nerves nicely.

Here's how I got Ultima 7 to run:

Created a shortcut on Win98 desktop which points to C:\COMMAND.COM,
and with these settings:

config.sys:

FILES=30

autoexec.bat:

smartdrv /u
SET SOUND=C:\SB16
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P300 T6
C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S
C:\SB16\SB16SET /P /Q
c:\utils\ctmousep.com

ctmousep.com is a special DOS mouse driver that takes little memory.

And when in DOS mode, I just ran Ultima 7 with a batch (.bat) file
like this:

moslo /40 ultima7.com

Or if I wanted to play Serpent Isle, which doesn't need MOSLO:

serpent.com

Hope this helps. So track down CTMOUSE from the net, and hopefully you
have a SB16 card, because it helps a lot getting the sound to work
with as little memory as possible.

And if you have a Roland MT-32 or LAPC-1, expect also to get great
music from those games...

Well the easiest way would be to keep your 486 with DOS 6.1 installed on it.
(*grin*)
(You could probably get a 486 for about the same price as a 3d card these
days...)

But assuming you are kinda attached to that Brand Spanking New, All Shiny
Pentium, check out

http://users.wantree.com.au/~rsd/ultima7.htm

I got this link from the r.g.c.u-d FAQ at
http://home.earthlink.net/~fortran/faq/rgcudfaq.html#4

That should have about everything I think.

Steve,
The only satisfactory way to run Ultima 7 is on an older slower machine such
as a 486 and you will either need it to run under DOS (or at least boot it
with pure DOS). Running it on a recent machine is a no-no - the game is
uncontrollable, you just can't grab control of anything with your mouse.
Although "moslo" is included in the Ultima Collection I don't think this
really helps the situation as it also grabs some memory and makes the
configuration that more difficult and buggers up the sound. So the moral is
never throw away the old machine if you want to play the old games.

Unless you have a Diamond Sonic Impact S90 PCI sound card, which has
a very nice DOS TSR driver that works beautifully with Ultima 7. This
card uses the Aureal A3D chipset, and making broad generalization here,
any other card that uses a chip like this will probably have a DOS
driver that will work with U7. In theory. :)

I find it works great on my Win98 AMD K6-2 350 with moslo and with
sound and mouse working beautifully. It took some fidling with the
config.sys and autoexec.bat. But it works great now.

Many cards do, but the problem with that "solution" is that the TSR
takes extra memory, which can mean you can't load that mouse or MOSLO
or smartdrv at the same time, which are vital to the game.

If you have a SB16 or 100% compatible (without any TSR), it doesn't
consume any memory in DOS.

Shane has already given you an URL for the FAQ. But since you are running
Win98, it is possible that you could have modern video cards such as TNT or
Voodoo for which they won't work with Ultima VII Forge of Virtue. Get Qfix,
at my website http://surf.to/ultima7, to fix that problem should you have
it.

What we need, is a 486 emulator on the modern PCs.

Voodoo 3 is NOT incompatible. At least, it works on my system.

I don't remember if U7 can stand himem.sys, but if it does, then it
may be possible to create UMBs with umbpci program, and you can
load all the drivers you will ever need.

Why not download an SNES emulator, then download the game? All said,
it willtake about a meg of hardrive space, no hardware conflicts, it's
free....there's no bad here. This is assuming the SNES Ultima 7 is
the same as the PC version?

And U6 too. I have them both as ROM images, and they work with SNES
emulators like ZSNES.

But for what it's worth, at least U7 SNES is crap. I don't like it at
all, it is nothing like the PC version. What's wrong with it? Let's
see, some points I remember:

- All the dialogue is different, and it is poor and simple English.
It feels like that the game was originally in Japanese, and they
translated it into English. It would have been better if they had
used the original dialogue from PC version.

- Music is poor (compared to Roland)

- In the beginning you are not inspecting a murder, but a kidnapping.
Nintendo apparently censored that out and changed it so that console
kids can play too.

- Overall, it is not the Ultima 7 that we know.

The only good things about it were that there are no configuration
problems like in PC version, and it scrolled smoother.

Ultima 6 SNES didn't seem to be as bad, but also in it the dialogue is
a problem. Just watch the intro and see the difference for yourself,
SNES intro made me laugh (negative).

Try these with ZSNES or SNES9x:

There is also a version of Ultima 6.

I have never played an ultima game, so I don't know if they are
exactly the same. I would assume so, since the titles are the same(IE
Serpent Isle, etc)

Anyone know for sure?

There is, and you can download it at my website. But it sucks, poorer
graphics and no party members. I'll suggest you go for the PC version.

It's not. It's majorly hacked.

The SNES Ultima 6 is rather better, but it still tries to cram more into a
cart that can really fit, and a number of things are excised.
