Help with Al Qadim: The Genie's Curse

I have just started El Qadim. Tried medium difficulty without much
success in the west. How in the *&^@!"<* do you get those purple
berries? How in the *&^@!"<* do you eliminate the creatures in this
area? I get four healing potions, but they are not enough to keep me
alive as I run around whacking the beasties. How do you get into the
Wizard's castle there? Can someone help me get started? I restarted
"very easy" and it's still too difficult for me. Duh... <whacking
head> And this is at the very beginning of the game.

Hi Chuck,

This a sort of a late response, but in case you are still stuck, the
purple berries are in a small peninsula east and slighty north by the oasis.
I find killing the wild dogs fairly easy, but the sand twisters can be a
pain for an early level character. Hit the sand twisters with your sling
shot from a distance (they don't attack you until you walk within a
certain distance) and NEVER let the monsters attack you from two or more
sides, keep retreating until they are lined up in a single file. BTW,
don't waste your time killing the shooting bushes, just run away. Hope
