Okay so imagine my shock when I finally beat Melissan for the first time,
that I have to do so twice more. Honestly, give me a break. How the hell
am I supposed to beat her when my spells have been depleated? Oh, and did I
mention I've used almost all my potions of healing? I have two more fun
filled rounds to look forward to! IMHO the balance of the game took a HUGE
nose dive at the end. A single battle would have been more than enough for
me. I could see if anymore potions are in the city from a previous save,
but then I have to tolerate more of those idiotic respawning mercenaries
that while beatble, are just damned tedious. I appreciate that Bioware
didn't make it a fluff battle at the end, but even on easy level this is
ridiculous.

Whew. Now, what are some strategies for beating this Melissan? I have
tried various things such as focusing on killing her, but nothing seems to
be working. Please help!

Brandt

summon planetars. Very helpful.

I agree. That ending WAS ridiculous.

Use a 'Wish' and get lucky (or save and reload a lot) and you can get
an option to 'wish' for the equivalent of a full night's rest - so you
get all spells refreshed and healing all around.

Well, here was my strategy: I cheated. That was the only time in the entire
cycle of Baldur's Gate games that I had to cheat, but I didn't feel like I
had any other choice. I did not like doing it at all, but I don't see how
you can win. I had a seriously kick-ass party, with me (Kensai/Mage),
Sarevok, Minsc, Viconia, Jan Janssen and Nalia. But the first battle, like
you mention, depletes you, and without being able to rest, you can forget
it. So, cheat.

Turn the difficulty level down to minimum, and/or reload.

The best strategy is indeed to focus on killing her. Fire off a couple of
pierce shields, and then lay into her with Greater Whirlwind Attack.
Summoning a planetar also helps.

As does laying normal and spike traps around her 'respawn' point.

Thanks for all the help. In the end I just wanted to finish the game, so I
used the dreaded CTRL+Y cheat to kill her summoned friends, and had my party
kill her. I never thought of the wish spell, oh well. I must say, though,
the ending drew this series to a cool close. I liked the end cinematic as
well as hearing what happens to your companions. Overall, however, the
majority of the game degenerated into sheer hack and slash. I thoroughly
enjoyed Watcher's Keep, at least there were puzzles there. Great job,
Bioware, despite my criticism. I think the BG series as a whole has had the
best graphics and sound of any CRPG (then again I'm partial to isometric
view), and I promptly disregard the attitude of the Infinity Engine being
outdated. If it continues to run great games, who cares? However, when oh
when will a developer make a CRPG with a whole lot more puzzles. The last
one I can think of was probably Wizardry 7.

Now, onto Arcanum. Sadly I think I'm going to be disappointed.

But what GREAT hack and slash it was! Plowing through scores of derro
berserkers in Sendai's dungeon was something to behold.

Actually I found it quite easy... ;) Hit her with +6 weapons like Carsomyr,
that cool Staff of the Ram etc. as her spells only protects against +5
weapons. Remember that a thief/bard can wield Carsomyr if you don´t have a
paladin. Use area spells like Abu´s Wilting and have a couple of summoned
creatures handy. Cast Warding Whips or use wands of spell striking that take
down her stoneskins if Carsomyr doesn´t do the job.

That´s the honest way to beat her, the much easier one is with traps,
especially the spike ones. On my second go at the game I killed her every
time with the traps my bard put up... ;)

As for running out of healing?! There´s so many potions in the game it´s
ridiculous!

It's quite possible to do it without cheating, although probably not
without at least one reload. My first time through, I reloaded a saved
game from before collapsing the pocket plane, and adapted my spell
selection, after realizing what it came down to. That worked, but
barely, since I had a magic-heavy party. After that, I simply made sure I
had three fighters with at least 6 Greater Whirlwind attacks (each!) in my
party, AND i knew that I had to target Melissan, and Melissan only. That
made it almost a cakewalk. The worst enemies were the !@%$-Shadow Slayers
with their level drain attack.

Right. But by the end of the game, you should have at least one
regenerating item, so if you can make it through the battles (I used
some potions up to keep my guys all around half life), it's just a
matter of going and getting a drink while the ring of regeneration or
axe of unyielding (or whatever) works its literal magic.
