Okay, so I'm probably just inept, but I'm having trouble figuring
out what I need to do to cast Shock ... I chose a BattleMage to start
and got Shock, Bouyancy, and SlowFalling. I can cast the other two spells
without difficulty, but when I cast Shock, the regular screen pops back
up with the "Press a button" instruction to fire the spell. I can click
the mouse buttons 'till the cows come home, but nothing happens. After
a few seconds, the "press a button" instruction disappears and my
spell points drop by the expected amount, but nothing else seems to
happen. I'm using View mode, and I've done some messing around with the
key mappings ... any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Is there a
specific button/key you need to press to fire the spell? The other
funny thing is I try to use the "Recast" spell key and it just tells
me I already have a spell loaded.

I feel pretty stupid about this ... thanks for any suggestions!

Eric,
Shock is a touch target spell. This means you can only cast it on
something that is _right_ in front of you. You will have to click
your left mouse button to successfully cast it - this is the only
failure of the view based mode. You will have to hit enter (or
whatever key you have mapped) to get your cursor to show up. Then
place the cursor on your target and BZZZT. FYI, I have a three-button
mouse, and I made my middle button the key that puts the cursor on the
screen.
You can cast shock (or any other spell you might need quickly) and
walk around indefinitley. Until you rest, anyways. If you need to
cast another spell while you have shock (or whatever) loaded, press Q
to abort the spell. You will even get your magicka back that you had
used. Of course, you might have remapped the Q button, so check your
controls to see what it is now.

You need to position the screen so that the monster at which you are
casting the spell is roughly in the middle of the screen. When you are
told to click to cast the spell position the cursor on the monster. When
the cursor is an X and on the monster, click the left mouse button (click
hard to make sure the system recognizes the click?) and the spell should
fire.

I believe this spell is delivered by touch. i.e. You have to be close to
an enemy to "cast" it successfully. Sigh... Back to killing.

In comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg, Ryan Gentry once scribbled:

Actually, you can just hit the space bar with your target roughly in
the center of the screen and it should fire.

[assuming default key config and view mode]

If you notice, the icon on the right in the spellbook is of a Hand,
which means that you have to be close enough to touch your opponent.

Actually, you don't. You can use your "select" button (the default is
the spacebar).

I use the view mode as well and ran into this problem. Try pressing
the space bar rather than your mouse button and see if it doesn't
do something a bit more creative.

Forgive me if this is in the manual, but I looked and could not
find it. What do those three icons mean? Okay, I figured out that
the second one indicates the area of effect, but what about the
others?

If this is not in the manual, why the hell not?

As far as I can tell, the first icon, which you can change, is the
symbol for it.. used when you have a time-based spell (such as
slowfalling).. that icon is what you see in the upper-left of the
screen instead of the name of the spell
