I was rummaging through my games looking for my copy of Might & Magic:
Dark Side of Xeen, and I can across The Bard's Tale Construction Set. I
haven't heard this game mentioned in ages. Are there any game created
with it online, or a place to upload them (not that I currently have
any). It strikes me as strange that this is never mentioned since the
Bard's Tale series is so popular. Oh well, just curious. Oh yeah, I
never did find M&M V, and I am very concerned!

In article <31B52F...@inlink.com>, do...@inlink.com says...

Yes, there is one called "Bard's Quest" that was created with the BT
construction set, and I too would like to know if there are any more.
Wouldn't it be cool to have a web page with tons of games created with it?

As a matter of fact, I've been thinking hard lately about designing my own
CRPG using the Bard's Tale Construction Set. I too think it would be cool
if there was as much support for this utility as there is for SSI's
Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures set. I mean, FRUA games are full of
TSR trademarks and therefore SSI couldn't allow the set to build it's own
.EXE files, but with BTCS you can build your own .EXE for your games and
distribute them to anyone. Don't get me wrong, I think the FRUA set is
great, but I never understood why there never was a following for BTCS. I
would be GREAT if I could download new art for BTCS like I could for FRUA
'cause I'm not much of an artist myself....

The trouble was, the Bards Tale Construction Set wasn't very good. The
interface was clunky, and on the computers of the time, very slow.

I remember that Construction Set ... The actual problem was that the games made
by it were virtually unplayable. I am a fan of Bard's Tale , and I have all 3
parts and also Dragon Wars which at the time (I played it on a C64) was
something of a unofficial sequel, but the construction set dissappointed me.
The enviroment was nice, and the item, spell, and monster editors were really
good, also you could make incredibly complex puzzles using a kind of macros
applied in the map. After a few minutes of actual playing, I gave up. The bard
songs which I enjoyed so much mutated into something which can't be associated
with any medieval period (altough you can replace the songs with something you
like better). The simple and extremely effective character screens were
complicated by tons of new pages which told notihng (you must always have a
list of available spells because you can't look them up during the game ).
Finally, the worst was the combat. There is no separation of the combat reports
for different characters/all you see is a wild jumble of words flowing through
the small text window.

Maybe I was too harsh on the game ... My suggestion : try playing one of the
games created by the BTCS before buying it.
