OK. Here goes. Mendoza is difficult to kill on the
hard difficulty .. nearly impossible regardless of
armor or skill. I had been using a bow exploit all
through the game, and it occurred to me that just
maybe Mendoza would also fall for it.
The exploit is well known in the Gothic series.
You just jump up on something high enough to
where your opponent can't climb up and shoot
arrows at him until he falls. In Risen, those places
are very hard to find, but the coders put them in
there, and they work.
At the end of the game, Mendoza attacks you
at the Golden Gate. Don't fight him. Instead, run
back to the stairs and down the long hall, being
sure to keep Mendoza just a few steps behind
you. Wait for him if necessary, or he'll get out
a fireball, and you are toast. At the end of that
long hall is the exploit platform. It is right in
the corner on the left. There are 2 columns
and several shelves. Stand between the columns
and right up against the shelves. Jump up.
You will climb up on the shelf, and Mendoza
will not be able to follow you. Instead, he will
simply stand there below, and you can get
him with maybe a dozen arrows. Easy.
I had tried everything else. Conjuring skeletons
works if you are on Easy Difficulty. Even then
not always. I was good for about 5 restarts
until the skeleton got him cornered, and I
could join in. This time through the game, I
was on Hard Difficulty, but I searched for
the platform ( and edge of the door ) exploits
and sure enough, they were always there.
I'm still looking for an exploit ( besides god
mode ) to fight the Fire Titan. That just gives
the game a bad ending.
