I've had Bard's Tale I for a long time, and have amassed quite a quantity
of items at the Equipment Shoppe. Some of the items, though, I've never
found out what they do. If anybody knows what these do, I'd like to know --
I've always been curious about some of them.
Truthdrum
Spiritdrum
Troll Ring
Troll Staff
Sorcerstaff
War Staff
Conjurstaff
That's all. Thanks!
Cheers,

BT1, that takes me back quite a while -- I played it on my old Apple
II C (not Mac) probably in 1986-87. I can make a guess for you on a
couple of those items -- but really my memory doesn't permit to be too
sure for this.
Troll Ring and Staff -- should allow you to regenerate hit points. I
don't remember how that game made you activate items, but wearing or
using the item should do it.
Sorcerer, Conjur, other mage staffs -- should give you extra casting
strength or allow you to regenerate casting strength for mages of the
correct type. Sorry I don't remember what the game called "casting
strength" spell points is the normal measure in games.
As for the drums, I have no idea anymore, give them to your bard and
let him play.....
My limited help probably doesn't tell you anything you don't already
know, but 'tis the best I can do after all this time. Twas a fun game.

Dunno

Probably creates a special character for the special slot.

Builds up your hitpoints.

Probably the same as the Troll Ring, except that it's a weapon.

Builds up spell points.

Decreases AC by 2.

Hmm. Perhaps it's this one that builds up spell points. :)

I hope those are right... it's been aaages since I played it. :)

I'm kinda wondering myself.... Especially the Troll Ring and Staff....
Those are 2 of the 5 most expensive items.... (If I recall correctly.) Yet
they seem to do nothing, nada, zip, zero, nil, ect.

For the Conjurstaff : a mage that has it equipped expends for every spell
half the amount of spell points normally required, except for the TrapZap
(effectively, spell points are doubled!!!).
For the Truthdrum : just guessing by the name.. perhaps when used in battle
(probably by a bard) it performs some kind of Disbelieve spell and destroys
illussionary enemies.
I have a question of my own. Do you, by any chance know what a Dork ring
does?

No. I don't, in fact, think it does anything at all. Judging by the name and
the fact that it's only worth 50 at Garth's, I believe that it's only there
to waste space in your inventory (and waste the time of idiots like me who
spend time trying to find out what it does). =)

These make you regenerate 1 HP per round when they are equipped. (Like a troll, get it?)

I've always wondered about these too.

Your bard can play bard songs on them (of course). Aside from that, if the
"use item" command doesn't work on them, then I doubt they do much.
>Troll Ring
>Troll Staff
If a character equips these, he she will slowly regenerate hit points when
wounded, like a troll.
[...]
>War Staff
I think this weapon does more damage in combat than any other staff
[...]
IMHO, none of these items are terribly useful... you're better off
equipping your magic-users with Mage Staffs (which regenerate spell points
:), your bard with Fire Horns or some other deadly instrument, and your
fighters with more damaging weapons (except for monks, which probably
fight better without weapons. :) The Troll items regenerate hit points so
slowly that IMHO you're better off giving the characters Shield Rings
instead, which lower their AC & therefore reduce their chances of taking
damage in the first place. ^_^
Oh yes, and the Dork Ring is completely and utterly useless. BT I - III
have no cursed items, but a number of useless ones. ^_^
