How do I actually identify items in my inventory?

I've found you have 'one' chance to identify an item ... if you can't
identify it, you have to throw it away because you'll never know what it is
(or you just load your game and try again).

Huh? I'm presently in Aboria (after slaying Brilhasti ap'Tarj) and I've
still yet to see any merchants. Since I've played long enought to raise two
Archmages, create a Chronomancer, and have a Hunter with Critical Hit(93)
... I don't expect to be finding any merchants soon.
Are there indeed shops later in the game? I'd love to be able to
sell/identify my items! I've only come across taverns, magic temples, and
training locations (aside from your occasional plot pivots like the King of
Aboria in his palace).

Isn't there an identify spell in the game?
I tragically can't remember, but I seem to recall it.
Just me.

Thus far I've discovered two ways of identifying items:
1) Have your Rogue character select the item in his inventory and choose
'Identify' ... If this fails, you're screwed and you'll never be able to
identify that item with the same character again.
2) The Chronomancer has a Level 5 spell called WHAT, that will ineed
identify items. My time mage only has the first level spells available to
her at the moment, so I don't know if it's failable like the Rogue's
identify (maybe you can only try once). I'm hoping it works like TrapZap
and is 100% on whatever you target! :)
