The Ur-Quan Masters (remake of Star Control 2, version 0.3 now
availble) is good, and while not technically "finished", it's
playable, winnable, and I can't find many missing features. The
graphics haven't been updated (yet), but much of the music has been,
and I think you can play it at higher resolutions than originally
possible (I can't because my video card doesn't support OpenGL).

While OS-programs (compatibility issues are extremely annoying) and games
are free, they always seem to be buggy and crappy. I prefer mainstream
software.

Well, the Urquan Masters is slightly different, since it shares the same
codebase as the original Star Control 2 and also it shares the artwork,
basdically what you have here is an updated Star Control 2.5 moved towards
a cross platform library (SDL)

The quality of OSS games is a different issue, if a game doesnt find enough
developers it doesn't come out of the stage you describe, but yet there are
some projects which really have commercial quality, exult for instance, and
various strategy games. I think the biggest obstacle those projects in
reality face is not the bugs but that the developers usually won't find
enough artists who are willing to donate time, so they stop the project
before most of the bugs are resolved.

But yet despite no budget and a severe lack of artists the codebase which
currently exists is rather impressive and future developers can build upon
it to make good games.

But the whole thing is an evolutionary process anyway, once codebase builts
upon the other so that in time the games will become better.
The whole Freecraft fiasco seems to have ended in a good end, with a handful
of projects taking over the codebase moving the game in a totally different
route.

exult currently reaches 1.1 status :-)
and yes some of the akalabeth and ultima 3 and 4 remakes are done already.

I just played the remake of Sword of Fargoal to victory. I had to
cheat like crazy (backing up saves) but it was fun. Granted, it's
roguelike, at best, but it's a ton of fun:

http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?name=Sword+of+Fargoal+Remake%2C+The

Tons of remakes here, some are RPG, various states of readiness:

Devil Whiskey was just done. There is a Wizardry clone on the above
site that is mostly done. I think there's a clone of Grimore in the
works that may actually beat the original to market.

It works for me, but only if I copy and paste the link into the bowser.
Do not click on the link if you're in an embedded newsreader.

That's not why the 5 digits were employed. The Home of the Underdogs
is the greatest single library of abandonware in existence. Freeware
and Shareware games are also featured here. The reason you need to
enter the 5 digits is because the site was getting a lot of bandwidth
stealing. This makes it much harder for other sites to link directly
to the files. I do not think I've ever received any spyware from the
Underdogs per se, but I run Ad Aware regularly to purge what I do pick
up.

The Retro Remakes site does not have a link to the source of the
Remake of The Sword of Fargoal, although the documentation would seem
to indicate that there was a relationship between the author of the
remake and Retro Remakes. I can only conclude that the Remake of the
Sword of Fargoal lost it's web site for some reason. So, I can't find
anywhere besides the Underdogs to download it from.

It's certainly worth installing Ad Aware or something similar to get
access to the files contained on The Home of the Underdogs. The
remake of the Sword of Fargoal is so good, that alone is worth it,
IMO. You're going get zapped with spyware and adware at some point
anyway. The only real way to deal with it is to install some
protection.

I think you misunderstand,

The underdogs site does not require installation of anything before
downloading items. You can simply close all of the popups and such (I do
agree, however, they are a bit too prevalent) and get right to the gaming
goodness!

I honestly do not believe that entering the 5 digits on the Underdogs
has anything to do with spyware. You can close all the pop-ups, by
you do have to enter the 5 digits. I take the site's author at his
word for two things:

1. He has no control over which pop-ups you get

2. The purpose of entering the 5 digits is to foil bandwidth thieves
who have a history of linking directly to his files.

The 5 digits has only been there about a month. Underdogs has been
around for years, and is a truly amazing collection of software you
can't buy anymore.

As for luring innocent users into a world of spyware, whatever. Just
because there's a large segment of the population that has no idea
what adware and spyware is, is no excuse for you to jog the
superhighway without shoes. I have absolutely been slammed with
spyware and adware without ever saying yes to any questions on a
dialog box. I'm willing to bet you have too. If you install
something like Ad Aware, then, you'll know.

The name of the zip file is sofremake.zip. If I could have found it
anywhere else, I would have included the link. As far as I can tell,
it's only at the Underdogs. Slander that site all you want, but
you're missing out on a great game.

I've never seen any spyware or popups on the Underdogs. (I still have
to enter the 5 digits).

Actually, I use "The Proxomitron" which removes almost all popups and
advertising from web pages. That's probably why I don't see it at the
Underdogs. Presumably, as you indicate, the people i/c of underdogs
show banner ads to try to recoup their bandwidth/hosting costs.

Anyway, this makes it clear that any spyware that the person saw was
entirely unelated to the underdogs and the 5-digits, and was purely
advertising banners.

Spam? I just get the "save-file" prompt from my browser. The file I'm
asked to save is "Sofremake.zip".

What browser are you using? I got Mozilla to swallow all the pop-ups.

Did you try it without getright?
