Stupid thing says the keybd and mouse controls can be reconfigured to
my preferences. Nothing seems to work. I've clicked on everything, but
no change. And it's that STUPID MF'ING EUROID KEYBD setup from as far
back as Gothic 1. Now I know why Jowood kicked PB out.

Got it ! What I did was uninstall Risen, and reinstall with "custom"
selected. That seemed to enable the changes
under SETTINGS. Graphics look super. Excellent frame rate.

Actually I just wanted to post it since I finally got risen from steam.
There is an overridable keyboard configuration in the settings menu, you
can change everything pretty much in game on the fly.

I have not played the game yet, due to my baby boy but I am looking
forward to it.

That didn't work for me until I did the CUSTOM install. Then it worked
fine. So far, I have the keybd - mouse configured very much like I
have
it in Gothic 3. It is much more efficient now, so I'm just wandering
around
the shoreline playing with things and changing settings to work best
for
me.

I'm not going to wander far until I know more about the game. Is there
a chat group ... like WOG for example ? I would like to move the
Quicksave
to F6, but it shows that it is locked. Need to edit an ini for that.

So far, the game settings look a lot like Oblivion. That is a little
worrisome. When do the bugs and rats get me ?

It is definitely not like Oblivion, thank god.

I left the girl at an abandoned house, and went up a mountain trail
nearby. On the way up, I entered a stone shrine, and just inside, I
fell through the floor into a prison cell where I was attacked by a
huge flying bug-moth. Killed it and found my way back up to the
exit .... I'm eating moths, rats, chickens as I go. Further up the
mountain, I met a guy who lives in the Swamp with the "Don".
He told me to find a better sword, and I'll accompany him to the
Don's camp. He will rescue the girl and take her somewhere else.
I'll go there and train ( I think ), and follow the quests from there.

Good game. Somewhat like Oblivion, but more like Gothic 2.
Even the sword combat is Gothic 2 .. alternate keyboard and
mouse settings I used in G2, I now have in Risen. My settings
are very efficient, so I'm already a good swordsman.

I'm enjoying the demo and have the game on order. I find the
sword combat quite difficult. I run and find someone to help.
What settings do you use?

I put forward on Mouse2 and 2nd combat on X for shield
work and parry. That frees most of my Lhand for quick side
steps since the attacks always come straight at you. A
quick side step can give you the "attack advantage" and
you stun-lock your opponent .. esp if you drive him against
a wall or tree or something. Also, I put quick access to
my sword on Z. Then, I'm not easily suprised .. and stun
locked before I can draw my sword. The parry is not always
useful except in the arena. Even then, the side step is
superior. In the side step, you watch for the swing, and
then attack to gain the stun-lock for a few hits .. then
jump away and repeat.

Thanks - I'll give it a try.

I would beg to differ regarding parry. I have sword at level 6 and big two
hander, name excluded although I can't imagine that its name could spoil
someones game, and your right click fast attack which also parries is great. I
have no fear invading a keep swarming with skeletons. Just find a nice choke
point so I don't get completely surrounded and then parry-hack parry-hack.
Very satisfying combat, especially against some of the tougher bosses as they
can last a while as you both seek an opening in your oponents defense.

I was never good with the 2-handed sword in G3. It may be better
here, but I'm steering for advanced attacks with the single handed
sword. I'm only at level 3 right now, but so far, I've managed some
good attacks against opponents who are clearly better armed than
I... What I do is run for nearby stairs so that I'm below the
opponent,
and then use the side step and parry with quick hacks to follow.

I've found that once you get the interupt ability you never even need to block
and it makes using bigger weapons much more viable. Being able to swat aside
and enemies attack and immediately counter attack is much more useful than a
simple block. I don't even bother to side step anymore, just standing toe to
toe and occasionaly leaping back and then lunge back in again with a hard
swipe. I really wish G3 had been like this.

That graphic card was a low-end one even a few years back when it was
new, and far below the minimum requirements stated on the back of the
Risen retail box (GeForce 7900/Radeon X1800).

Time for you to upgrade your graphics card. And get some more RAM
while you're at it, it costs next to nothing these days.
