Hello all!

I just bought BG with TOSC and BG2 with Throne of Bhaal.

I decided to play BG first, although BG2 looks VERY cool.

I installed the game fine and played for a couple of hours with no
problem last night.
Tonight, I put CD1 in and the intro comes up. I click on Play and it
loads for a few
seconds and then says "Insert CD 6 in drive E:\". The game only came
with 3 CDs.
I put CD3 in and it continued to load. When I try to load a saved game
it crashed to
the desktop. If I repeat the process and insert CD1 before loading the
saved game
it seems fine, although it has crashed three times while loading a new
area (I'm at the
Firebrand Inn or whatever; very early in the game) and just killed the
wizard on the steps
before you get to the inn.

I installed the patch before starting to play. I have 2 CD drives (a
CD-ROM and a
CD-RW). I tried switching their drive letters, making the CD E: and the
CD-RW F:
with no change.

Any ideas? I know this game is old-ish, but any help appreciated. My
system:

PIII 933 with 384MB RAM
Voodoo5 AGP
SB 128 PCI (on-board Intel MB)
Both CD drives are Panasonic

Thanks,

- Tom N.

I've been playing Baldur'sGate quite a bit recently, including the
Tales expansion pack, and the Dark Side of the Sword Coast expansion. First
off, my copy came with 5 cd's, plus 1 for the ToSC expansion. "insert cd6
in drive e:" usually means the ToSC cd. There are known problems with cd
swapping, but it's too much to go into here. Try this website for some
help: www.planetbaldursgate.com If nothing else, you can read up on
customizing the game. Custom portraits, sound files, etc, etc. Good
luck....

I don't know about that newer edition of BG they put out with TOSC, how it
was done up... but the original BG came with 5 CDs (in this little brown tri
folding envelope) and you got a CD6 with TOSC
(it said Tales of the Sword Coast on it, but might also have CD6)

So, if the copy of BG you bought was used, that might be the problem
there... I can't really see how they could do a revision and end up
compressing the data from 5 CDs down to 3 if it was the revised BG/TOSC
boxed set that came out last year.

I just got Planescape in a jewel box CD and it only came with 2 CDs and I
think the original had 4. So, they must be doing something to these
re-releases. Or, the original didn't have to be 4 CDs and they do it just so
they can say "It spans 4 CDs!"

The original PS:T does come on 4 CD's and they're all used (unlike in
Morrowind, which only uses CD 1). I'm not sure how they can have
compressed it to 2 CD's without removing anything; perhaps they've
changed the format of e.g. the thousands of sound files?

Later Bioware games used more efficient compression for the data files.
Re-releases of some earlier titles took advantage of the higher compression.

To answer the original question, as I recall there was a bug with the
installer occasionally asking for CD6 - I think it can be solved by giving
it CD1 instead.

BG only came with 3 CDs? Mine was 5 and CD 6 was TotSC. Are you sure you
didn't end up with the preview version? BG2 was 4CDs, and 1 extra for ToB.

I don't know if this is the same problem, but I remember that there was an
installation bug in the original. The problem occured when it asked you to
insert the the next CD and you hit the "ok" button before the the CD was
recognized by the Operating system. Rather than getting a "drive not ready"
error message, it would ask you to insert a CD with the next higher number.
I was able to get it ask for disks 7,8,9,etc. by this method. With me, my
DVD takes forever to be recognized once I put a disk in. You can avoid the
problem by waiting awhile before hitting the "ok" button.

Hope this helps,
Stephen

Did you ever do the manual "full" install, where you copy the contents of
discs 2-4 to the game directory? (and change the ini file to point there).

If so, you'd notice on every disc, about 20 times you'll get "file
arXXXX.bcs
already exists, overwrite?". (where XXXX is numbers like ar0607.bcs, etc).

The data was extremely redundant across the 4 cd's. Probably to reduce
swapping. I am not surprised they could fit it onto 2 cd's.

Yes, I remember that happening to me when I first installed it, you just
put the first disc in and it should continue.

I'm pretty sure it's the full version. It doesn't say anything about being a
demo/preview
version.

The problem was answered by some folks at http://www.planetbaldursgate.com; I
installed the
TOSC patch after installing the game. That patch was designed for the original
release.
The version I have (called BG: The Original Saga) is a re-release with the
patch already installed.
