Here are some questions from a beginner:

It seems that there are two way to identify items: cast the identify spell
or have someone in a fort identify it for you. Even though I have a mage
who can cast mage spells of levels 1 thru 3, he can never cast the identify
spell anywhere. This spell is level one. How come it is not available
when I try to cast mage spell?

I am very early in the game, and have only gone thru 2 forts. Where can I
find someone who can identify items for me? Please don't send me to the
Tower of Mage, which is too far in the south. I want to find a place that
is close to the starting point of the game.

What about potions? I can usually figure out what they are based on their
effects when I use them. But this does not help identify the same type of
potions when I find them later on.

A frustrated beginner wants to know.

Because you dont know that spell. There are a few spells in levels
1-3 that you dont start out knowing, but have to find somewhere
in the game.

As far as I know, the only place to identify items while in
Chapter 1 is a sage in Formello.

You need to identify them as well.

The spell can be found much later in the game, at the witches'
coven on the south bank of the river that Silvar is on, just SE of
Silvar, if I remember correctly.
You gotta either bump up your skill or pay at the fort.

You have to first learn the identify spell, I believe, and I haven't done
that myself. So I can't help.

Follow the (broken) road to Formello, there you should be able to find
someone that will do identify for you. (You will also be able to learn a
whole bunch of level 4 spells, which I should have done before going off
after the Vahanatai...)

Stay a while and learn those spells, you will run into more than a little
trouble later on against the Vahanatai otherwise... (The roaming bands, the
city folk are nice enough to not attack.)

Try looking in Formello.

What your characters need is item lore skill. This lets them tell what
items are, if they have already identified similar items.

While you have the capability of casting all level 1 through 3 spells, you
may not know the actual spell yet. In the case of Identify, you can't
find that spell until Chapter 4. By the way, there is a third way to
identify items. If your party's Item Lore skill is high, you will be
able to identify most items without needing a sage/spell.

Head east then south from Fort Draco to Formello. A sage there can
identify stuff for a nominal fee.

I'm afraid you have to identify each one as you find them.

Thanks to these who replied, I went to Formello and have many items
identified. Got rid of lots of junk. Now my PCs have spare slots for new
items.

Thank you all. Happy adventuring.

You will get that spell later on after completing a dungeon. I forget
which one, but it is not till later in the game.

The only place to identify items in Chapter 1 of the game is Formello, a
town to the southeast of the fort you started at.

You are correct. You will need to identify the potions each time or
eventually acquire some Identify Items skill for each of your characters.
Both Exile and Exile II to have long and interesting storylines and lots
of dungeons. And it is frustrating at the start of the game to learn all
you need to know to play it easily. But it is a lot of fun.

I think you have to buy that spell or have some one teach it to you, try
going south as far as you can on East side of the river and you will find
the town of Formello. I think you will find what you are after there!

Regards and Best of luck,
