1. Raise at least two characters' speed statistics over 200 (that's
the Darkside Mega Dragon's speed rating) with the help of fountains,
items, potions, etc.
If you have both Darkside & Clouds of Xeen, then here's a glitch you can
exploit: visit the Well of Intellect first (+ 50 int., Clouds B3 x15, y4),
then the fountain of +10 physical statistics at Clouds C3, x15, y10, and
then the Shrine of the Gods third (+10 all statistics, Darkside D4 x12,
y4). Despite the usual nature of temporary statistics modifiers to be
uncooperative, these three, when visited in this particular order,
temporarily granted us each +70 additional Speed.
2. Teleport into the Mega Dragon's face... now that the party is in
close-range combat,
3. Hit the Mega Dragon with physical attacks (the Darkside Mega
Dragon is 90% resistant to physical attacks & 100% resistant to everything
else.) The Xeenslayer sword is a good weapon for this purpose. The easiest
way to get lots of Xeenslayer swords is to repeatedly say "I lost it" to a
Clouds of Xeen mirror portal.
4. Let one of the slower characters with speed over 200 cast the Time
Distortion spell, so that the party can get away before the Mega Dragon
has a chance to eradicate them with its mighty breath.
5. Repeat steps 2 - 4 until the Mega Dragon is dead.
Since the Mega Dragon, like the rest of Xeen's monsters (and
unlike the your band of adventurers) cannot heal itself between instances
of close-range combat, this technique is both effective and easily
performed without risk to the party. It's also quite useful against
ordinary dragons, or most other tough monsters.
My party got lots & lots of experience & 234 gems for killing the
Mega Dragon. When we descended down the grate that the Mega Dragon had
been guarding, we found one bottle of previously nigh-inaccessible XEEN
Power Juice (+5 levels for one character) in a side alcove of the top
level of Alamar's castle. Admittedly, the party's reaction to slaying the
Mega Dragon was "That's it!? 234 gems and one lousy bottle of XEEN power
juice??? Alamar sure was a skinflint... if *I* were a Mega Dragon, *I*
wouldn't be guarding castles for such pitiful wages..." Perhaps Alamar
coerced the Mega Dragon into the job... since after all, no mortal could
defeat Alamar in combat, and the Mega Dragon did turn out to be mortal
after all.
