I have played this one twice to conclusion. The first time I cheated and
modified all players so they were practically gods. My cleric was the
only one to survive after slashing it out.
The second time, I engaged the enemy then moved as many of my party behind
a long wall with an opening only at one end. The dracolich's couldn't
figure out how to get at my party, the battle timed out, my party survived
and I won! Found this out purely by accident. Realize it is rather lame
but all is fair in love and war!

This opinions are my own stupid ones.

What I did was, during the first few rounds, to move all my characters
out of the area which was full of monsters and had them hidden behind walls
far away from that area. I then set all my characters to auto mode, and
after > 50 rounds or so, the battle would finish.
Yes, I get thru the battle without killing the monsters, but this
is the only way I could think of for getting past it easily.
David how do you change characters? Is there an editor out there or
do you have to go into save game and do it?
Boots of speed and rings of immunity to electricity are very important.
You should haste all characters for the first battle as well... Any other
protective spells that could be useful in any way should also be cast prior to
the battle.

Hmm, I think a Dracolich has +95% magic immunity. Looks like
swordwork time, also there was a scroll of Immunity to Dragon's Breath in
the game in Thorn's Realm.

If you're refering to the battle I think you are...
The way I defeated them, was to run into the hallway right above your starting
point. Once up there hide your characters right around the corner, this way
your opponents won't hit you unless they close to melee range. The other thing
I did was to shoot the demons with Fire/Electrical Shields with missile
weapons. This prevented me from killing myself. :>)
Good Luck,

It has been a while... but if I remember correctly.... invisibility was also a key factor...

Did you do this using the vault cheat, or is there another way?
*snicker* I find that 5 L40, dual classed humans, and one L30 ma/wa/th,
Can turn this battle into sludge.
Although having 6 vorpal blades, and 6 rings of blinking helps as well :)
Tactics-wise, the best thing to do is to hurl fireballs at those blue minions
and kalistes' pets, then the dracolich's and bits aren't so bad. The second
and third battles are the trickier ones, key of importance is to smack the
"elder orbs" and the death tyrants FAST, cause the normal beholders are
comparatively weak.
Since you have no magic in the 3rd battle, *THE* most important thing is to
have at least 2 really good archers...fine composite longbows and arrows+4
are crucial to hit those damned blue minions.
Vault cheat? *innocent blink* 5 of them I got that way, the 6th I got by
restarting the game and killing Manshoon...didn't bother duping it the first
time, cause my 6th character is a designated archer (if he goes below 200
arrows, something is WRONG :)).
I like making vorpal arrows, energy draining swords, fireball throwing
daggers, and poisoned fists... Ah, the wonderful world of hex-editing. :)
Pools of Darkness *is* the conclusion of the Pool of Radiance series, not
the Savage Frontier series. I assume there was a third part planned for
the Savage Frontier, but the plans were cancelled.
PoD is designed to accept characters directly from Secret of the Silver
Blades, which is the third part of the PoR series. Furthermore, PoD
at one point slaps down old fiend T. (of Pool of Radiance and Curse of
the Azure Bonds infamy) from attempting to rise yet again...
Also it returns to Phlan on the Moonsea, where the arc all began...

Hmm, I played this game a few years back, as well as the Gateway &
Treasures to the Savage Frontiers parts. I recently bought the Gold Box
CD with all the games and noticed that Pools of Darkness is listed as the
conclusion of the Savage Frontiers trilogy. If so I'll be restarting with my
Treasures Party which in my opinion was over balance with Mages at -10 ac.
I thought that it was part of the Pools of Radiance series.

The T. is Tyranthraxus. Tanetal makes his only appearance in Pools
of Darkness.
Is it possible to port characters between different series (i.e.
Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, and Savage Frontier)?

Yep, provided that the levels match up that is you can not port
30th level chars in a 15 level game. I dont know how the game would handle
a dragonlance if there was not one in another game.

I thought as much, but <wink> I think I'll port my Savage Frontier's
party anyway could be fun. I imagine T. is Tanetal.

You need to speak with the watcher, she guides you through the process of
beating tanetal. The thing you need to do is to carve weapons from the spear
imbeded in moander's heart, this a) gets you along in the plot, and b) gets
you some magical weapons to fight with :)
I have spoken with the watcher, but she basically told me to go away ;)
I've wandered throughout the heart, but i havent found any spear;
what i *have* found are "places where the watcher comes often"
and a little glob of flesh with a mouth, that bites me.
(and a bunch of random iron golems and other friendly folk).
Another thing i seem to have missed somehow...
Back in the drow city, to get into the underground region
you're suppoed to do *something* in the 'place where the wagons
come from or go to'. I played this game long ago, on PC (and got
halfway through) and didnt recall have any problem getting through
that spot, but now i cant seem to remember what itis that
you're SUPPOSED to do there. Just walking into the square where the
wagons go, isnt doing much.
(btw, the version im playing now is from the mac CDROM, if it makes
any (bug) difference.
The spear is in the northwest side, the right atrium (i think....) once you
carve some weapons from it, the heart will speed up, and as I recall, you
walk around to find the watcher being ambushed...once your rescue her, she
will trust you, and enlist your aide in beating tanetal.
