Well, I beat the first 3 beholders to only find that I have to fight
about 12 more... Since I'm only on CH2, I figure I'd come back when the
Adventurer's mart restocks with the reflecting shield. Exactly what
chapter is that?

Well, it doesn't. The reflecting shield is sold by the bonus merchant. The
mart gets new stuff after chapter five.

To be more specific, it's the bonus merchant that comes with the
Collector's Edition bonus CD (not the preorder CD).

Aw...crap. I have the preorder one... Well, I guess I'll have to wait
until I can get better items. Is there a list of what beams they can
shoot? Maybe I can stock up on enough potions to counter most of their
nasty beams.

You can download the files that are necessary to add the Bonus CD
merchant from this site ( authorized by Bioware ) .

There is another item in the game which helps you get rid of beholders.
You'll find later on (on the way to Underdark) a cloak which reflects spells.
Just walk into any beholder-infested cave and wait... Great fun. The only
spells which affect you are area spells, so you have to protect yourself from
chaos, panic and things like that...

The best tactic I found (minus the ray-shield) is to use Aerie, armed with
a combination of Minor Spell Turning and Slay Living. The beholders'
spells bounce back at them while she walks up and kills them with one shot
(usually). Excellent process, but doesn't work too well with the Ghalls,
only the major beholders.
