I've got a fairly high-level sorcerer, but I can't put a dent in the
Steel Lords on (I think) level 13. They slice through me like a hot knife
through butter. How can I beat these guys?

Two words, Chain Lightning. High level Lightning is a decent substitute
as well.

The Steel Lords seem immune to fire, but lightning does some damage to
them. So if you have the lightning spell and heaps of Mana Potions and
a very quick index finger you should be able to beat them.

I'm currently playing Diablo again with a sorcerer and I'm on the 13th
Level of the dungeon. I've cleared all the Steel Lords out, but I'm
doing the Warlord of Blood quest and the Lightning Spell doesn't seem to
work to well on the Warlord. So if you don't come across the Warlord of
Blood, the above method should work OK on the Steel Lords.

Remember to have Town Portal and plenty of money to buy more potions.

Regards,

Dave

Yeah, I run into them at level 13 got kill good. Only lighting hurt them,
so use ur chain lighting. If ur chain lighting suck then use lighting. Just
remember not to get too much steel lord active. If u cast chain lighting
chances r good u'll wake up lots of them. Run to a room where u no there r
no monsters nearby and just deal with one or two steel lords.

A fairly high-level fireball rocks their world.

My sorceror is a wimp, so I deal with fire-immune monsters by getting
2 or 3 (or, in an emergency, 4) of them alone in a room with me, stone
cursing all of them, and letting loose with chain lightning until they
are all dead. Hey, he's a wimp, but he has cool spells. I find that
the effort of stone cursing them costs me less mana than a long retreat
with the significant possibility of getting smacked hard if they catch
up with me. Higher spell/character levels of chain lightning will let
you kill steel lords pretty quickly, so you can often just cast that
spell 5 or 6 times in a room, and reduce the number of nasty monsters
to a level you can deal with without stone curse. But either way, you
are going to need *A LOT* of full mana potions, killing fire immune
monsters is *NOT* a mana-efficient proposition, unless they just don't
have any hit points to speak of.

Oh, and if you say that you don't need to worry about getting caught
or smacked hard, then congratulations, you're a better player than I
am. That's not saying much, but until *I* don't need to worry about
it, I'll keep right on stone cursing fire-immune monsters.

Just me.

I found the stone/hack worked well for me.

On Level 13 - you can try attracting only a few Knights (1-3) in one go by the
carefull use of the Guardian spell.

Try casting Guardian into a room before entering it - as soon as a Knight is hit - he
will come looking for you - have enough mana potions for a Stone Curse and hack the
Knights (the most I had on me at any one time was about 6) - on the 13th Level - it
was taking about 5 - 6 hits with the 'Flaming staff of Stone Curse' - later on I
found some much better weapons and got the hacks down to 2-3 hits.

If you happen to attract too many Knights - make your way back to the stairs and
stand between the stairs and wall - the Knights will only be able to come at you 1 at
a time (ok from both ends of the small corridor) but a quick Stone curse and hack can
work well here - just make sure you have a scroll of teleport handy to be able to
jump out of the area and to the stairs should things get too hot.

If you can afford the mana cost - I strongly suggest using mana shield - if you get
hit, you do not lose the spell you are casting and you do not get 'stunned'.

If I recall.. chain lightning works well against them.. advocates and
soulburners though on hell setting .. nasty. And never run back to the
stairs.. that's where they'll be waiting for you the next time you come
down..and you won't even get a chance to cast mana shield. Throw a
portal on the level if you're not sure you can handle the level and
steer clear of stairs. That way if you have to run to the stairs..the
portal is clear..if you use the portal..the stairs are safe and clear.

The last time I met them in HH, level 20 Chain Lightnings seemed to work.
Needed half a dozen shots though.

Curse and Naj's Light Plate -- They help make a giant fireball too,
chewed thorough Nightmare Diablo)

Hello, still there? I use Lighting or Chain Lighting. Seems to work. Sorry for my 20 years of late reply.

It warms my heart that this internet history is preserved. Seeing posts from 1997, when I was 10, is amazing. It's 2023 and I am replaying Diablo 1 and playing a sorcerer for the first time ever. This post helped!

But yeah, lightning does the trick, and having mana shield with a ton of points in magic allows you to face tank them.
