From my experience you need both a high intelligance and perception to
get that node (you need to notice that something is wrong, and be smart
enough to ask about it I guess). There are more nodes scattered
throughout the game that require something other than a high int to
get. The short of it is that you will never get that quest.

Don't Mentabs increase your perception? I have found that "drugs" are
a temporary way of getting around character deficiencies . . .

If you want to get the task of little Johnny, you should talk to Bal... (I
cant remember the name) at the General Store at Modoc Main Street.

Well, you must only need a 6 for intelligence/perception at most because
that is all I have and I got the quest by noticing that something seemed
to be wrong. And I have done nothing in Modoc at all. In fact, I reloaded
again after Vic got chewed by the dogs attacking the brahmin so I really
haven't even been there in my current game. I'm only level 5 with a
Karma of just over a hundred (been digging up graves), but I don't know
if that matters.

Note: I have the final patch installed and started playing with it that
way.

His name's Jo...I've tried that...but now I just get "Thanks for
saving our town!" and a chance to barter....*sigh* All he was able to
do was give me the ghost farm quest. I had already talked to Karl
before Modoc, so I didn't have to run to the Den on a time limit, and
I had looked at the "fake bodies on a stick" the first time to the
ghost farm, so when I returned to talk to him it was all..."thanks a
lot, send Karl back to us someday if you see him...I'll talk with the
Slags..." and he didn't have much else to say to me. I'm wondering if
I screwed myself by talking to Karl before seeing Jo in Modoc and not
talking to Vegir a second time before the negotiations. I've got a
funny feeling I "messed up the order" somehow.

Thanks,

Thanks Grifman...I hadn't even thought of Mentats! I try to keep my
character "clean" and sell any drugs I come across...(I hate that
annoying addiction stuff) I don't think I have any on me, and I'm not
sure where I sold my next batch....but it's worth a try. I do know I
can get some in Vault City...which is only a hop skip and a jump away.
Once for the hell of it after saving my game, I decided to blow First
Bitch...er.....Citizen Lynette's head off and found little miss "drug
and alcohol free society" carries a good supply of Mentats herself.
;-) (No wonder she's such a pain in the ass.) I think I'll run over
there and heh-heh...."make her pockets a little lighter" for my own
benefit and give this a try. Who knows, maybe on my next visit to VC
she'll be a little nicer without them!

Yours,

It isn't Jo you want to talk to. It's Balthas, Johnny's father. He's inside
another building in Modoc.

My memory may be off on this but I seem to recall that when I talked to
the father at first i didn't get the quest either. I only got it when i
talked to him again _after_ speaking with the mother who sort of
mentioned there was a problem (which presumably opened up the
converstaion option with the father). Have you tried that sequence of
converstaions? Good luck.

Michael
