I have tried this spell several times, but it does not seem to help me
learn about any of my inventory, though it is supposed to. If you look on
page 30 of the manual, it says that "when this spell is cast, one item in
the mage's hand is identified for what it really is. The mage learns the
item's name and the attack or damage bonuses it has." So far this spell
hasn't done what it is supposed to do. It has not revealed anything about
the items that I put in my hand. Can anyone help here?

I have got this to work. Here's what I had to do:

1) The item MUST be in your hand when you cast the spell.
2) I have found that It will identify TWO items if you remove the spellbook
from your hand (after readying the spell, but before casting) and then
place an item in each hand.
3) click on the spell.
4) when you move the item out of your hand to place it back in your backpack,
it will now be identified. (ie: sword +1)

The best thing to try this on is Armor or Jewelry. Because I've found
that most weapons in the early stages of the game aren't magical. So,
if you cast it on two items that aren't magical, it will appear as if the
spell didn't work, when In reality, it did.

If I remember correctly, when you cast it on armor, it will tell you how
much AC bonus you get from it, even if it isn't magical. Which is why
I recommend that you experiment with the spell on armor first.

Drop me a line if you have any problems.
