Hi,

I'm playing a melee character and using the balanced sword with 20 dex (incl
agil of fire bonus) and on any undead greater than a ghoul, I get a "to hit"
percentage of 0%. My str is only 10, is that causing it?

The undead that I can't hit have a little "brick wall" icon in the info
box - is this related? The manual is unclear as to exactly what this
means......

Thanks

Sam

This is because the magickal aptitude of the undead in question is greater
than your technological aptitude, so it is interfering with the
effectiveness of your weapon (the balanced sword counts as technology since
it is built from a schematic). Once you exceed them, you'll see your to-hit
chance skyrocket. Very hard fights will change to very easy fights then. Go
and smack around some non-magickal foes elsewhere for a while, get more
levels, put it in tech skills or colleges, then come back and stomp them. Or
switch to a magickal weapon or a normal melee weapon.

Right, thanks. I'm actually playing a melee character who employs a
bit of magic (agil of fire, harm, shield o prot) and I've got a magic
apt of around 8. I've screwed up this characer a bit - I dumped
points into tech to get the balanced sword early, before I found
Magnus. Doh!

That's really rather twisted. Not that mages have any problem surviving
without a balanced sword, but it's difficult to make a character who is
"mage with tech backup" or "tech with magical backup." I suppose that's
just the way the game is designed. If you balance your tech and spells,
you can have a character with midway aptitude, but as far as I can tell,
that isn't terribly useful (nowhere near as useful as throwing your
character fully one way or the other, that is).

On the other hand, other combos like "melee with magical backup" or
"tech with throwing" work fairly well.

And my favorite, "magic with enough melee to get rid of pesky mosters
without wasting a harm spell" :)

I was reading the "UberFAQ" at terra-arcanum and there is a section where
the developers explained the how's and why's of all this - the system
definitely works against people who try to dabble in both. You can do it,
but such a character loses a lot of advantages and gains none. It makes
sense, given their development of the two forces in their game world, but it
is a bit disappointing for the player who would like to sample both. You
really have to play the game through at least twice to see the world of
technology and the world of magick.

You got that right. My warrior mage is armed with a Filament Sword and
regularly does 12-17 damage per hit and almost always hits. Combine that
with the protection spell and last night he single handedly took out a
level 40 crystal spider and a whole bunch of of level 30 crystal spiders
and shadow spiders.

My character at 23rd level has turned into such a badass that I've been
considering dumping Virgil - he's becoming more of a burden than a help
but keep him around as a pack mule.

Which leads to my question about followers. All the ones I've found are
real losers. My guy is a good guy with 65 rep so the mage in Ashbury
won't join me. Dante is a bleeding heart liberal who got pissed when I
recovered the Elite Plate for that guy in Ashbury and attacked me (still
haven't figured that out) - so I offed him. Picked up Vollinger in
Dernholm but he kept stealing my stuff so I stripped him naked and sent
him packing in the woods far from everywhere (he ended up back in
Dernholm). The Doctor wannabe in Dernholm won't join me because I'm too
magical. Sogg will now join me but I'm 23 level and he's just 2nd so no
joy there.

So where's all the NPC followers. I was kinda hoping I could get
Maximillius to join me but it seems like he's not a follower type and
neither is his niece Lianna.

Where are all the good followers?

Sogg is awesome as a pure fighter. He just raises his ST, DX, Melee,
and Dodge and by 40th level basically anything he hits he cuts in half.

Later on you can get Raven or Z'an A'lurin as either a good elf or evil elf
magical follower, respectively. Also good if you're into the whole "love
interest" thing and you're character's enough of a prettyboy. Jormund is a
magical dwarf, of all things, carries a wicked magical staff (speed 23, IIRC).
Gar is a decent pure "orc" fighter, you can pick him up in Tarant if your Int
is high enough. Chukka just mashes enemies, as most good half-ogres do; he's
also in Tarant. Sebastian is also in Tarant, if you want a shady rogue type.
Perriman Smythe is a magician specializing in White Necro, Phantasm, and
Elemental Fire; also in Tarant, but appears only after Mr. Willoughby shows up
back in town.

Loghaire Thunderstone joins up fairly late in the game, but he packs a mean
punch. A quest in Caladon will get you a Medical Arachnid as an NPC that
doesn't count towards your Cha limit. Dog is probably the best early follower
to pick up, in Ashbury; he eats ore golems for lunch and laughs at elementals.

I can't remember any other NPCs at the moment, but those are the ones I've
encountered so far (level 43 prettyboy charismatic gunsmith gunslinger trying
to get to Thanatos Island).

It is a bit twisted. I think that in my case, I'll need to replace the
balanced sword with a magical one, but I'm not happy about losing the speed
factor. Big mistake on my part to spend any points at all in tech
skills.......

the dog in Ashbury seems perfect for you "Maddog"; he is a real terror
if you get him early enough--may be too late for you.
