There ain't none.
Nope. Nada. Zilch.
There is precisely ONE such sword with a +3 bonus, that you can find
on your way back from rescuing Nalia. It's cool power? +1 fire damage.
That's it. In fact, most of the magical bastard swords in the game will
be found in that leg of the adventure.
What I find annoying is that the beginning of the game has a weapon
description for katanas that indicates that magic katanas are extremely
rare, whereas one is very likely to find a cool two-handed sword. This
is technically true, but very misleading. There's one +3 katana in the
game and it's probably the best +3 weapon in the game, and you can get
it in chapter 2 once you're tough enough. There's several +3 thru
+5 two-handed swords in the game, which are all quite nice, but the
specifically mentioned vorpal blade and holy avenger are extremely
limited in their usefulness. You can't get the vorpal blade until
chapter 6, and the holy avenger is useful only if you find room for
a paladin (Keldorn or yourself) in your party (and even then you have
to kill one of the baddest dudes in the game to get it!).
Here's a quick list of "good" weapon proficiencies to take in the game,
especially if you are considering what to specialize in:
[DEFINITELY GOOD CHOICES]
- Staff (Yes, staff! You can buy a kick-@$$ staff early in the game.)
- Flail (About 3 quests into the game, you find out why flail is a useful
proficiency.)
- Katana (There's a way cool katana in the game that is challenging to
get, but you can get it early.)
- Battle Axe (Plenty of great axes in the game, and some even are returning
throwing axes!)
- 2-hand Swd. (Plenty of them around, and you can find a +3 one very early.)
- Short Sword (plenty of cool short swords in the game with nifty special abilities)
[INTERESTING CHOICE TO TRY]
- Spear (There's a +3 spear in the game that does +10 piercing damage
per hit. It might be worth it to try it out some time.)
[GOOD BUT NOT GREAT]
- Long Sword (You will quickly find that you're the ONLY one in your party
that knows long sword to start with. Funny that.)
- War Hammer (the best one-handed weapon in the game is a war hammer, though
you get it late, and you have to give up cool stuff to get it)
- Scimitar (But not for druids: for the wakizashi/ninja-to! If you have
the bonus CD -- or an editor -- there's some nice ones of these.
The only "cool" scimitar's are Drizz't's: don't bother.)
- Bow (Go for short bows! There's plenty of cool long bows, too,
but you can get a good fast short bow early in the game. If
you're an Archer, try it out.)
- Dagger (I found daggers to be quick weapons, which would be great weapons
if they weren't daggers. Some are throwable and return.)
[DON'T BOTHER]
- Mace
- Dart
- Sling
- Halberd
- Crossbow
- Bastard Sword
- Club
- Scimitar (if you intend on using it for scimitars)
It isn't that these last few weapons aren't "fairly" represented magically
in the game, but rather that the timing of their appearances and their general
utility overall makes other weapons better choices. For example, what fighter
would bother specializing in darts, bows or slings, when there are good bows,
axes and daggers which hit harder and faster? Of the above choices, I would say
that Mace, Bastard Sword, and Scimitar are the three item times that are not
very well represented magically in the game: they're around, but other choices
for proficiencies are distinctly better. There's actually a cool club in the
game, but if you have Jaheira in your party, she's the one who can use it best
(since scimitars suck).
James Daniel
- dragonbane +3 sling
- Everads sling +5 , +1 bullets
- plus there are some cool stones i.e sunscorch
Halberds , with these two weapons you've got plenty of
punch:
- halberd +3 , +6 dragons, (very early in game )
- The wave ( for the later part of the game)
kind agree with you for maces,
good selection but not overly powerful,
- Mace of disruption + 2
- Mace +3 (+5 against humanoids?) from the village in underdark
- Mauler's arm +2 (gives 18 str)
Dual wielding the top two makes you a lethal undead killer.
Definetly agree with you for the rest.
>SPOILERS. MAJOR ITEM SPOILERS!

And don't forget the possibility of dual-wielding Celestial Fury with
Crom Faeyr! You get +7 THAC0 and +14 damage, PLUS a reliable,
devistatingly effective stun attack. That combo is second only to the
Staff of the Magi in the hands of a kensai/mage.
There isn't any good bastard swords in the game :( You may find one or two
but they're nothing when compared to the huge selection of longswords in
BG2. I would definately go with long sword or katana.
Really? Where??? I have one mage who doesn't melee and I would like very
much to change that.
You can buy the staff of Rynn from the Adventurer's Mart as soon as you
get out of the beginning dungeon (provided you have the money, of course
- it costs about 14,000 gold) it's a +4 staff
