Shadow of Yserbius - solo game: help needed

I've got the "solo" version of the Sierra Network's "Shadow of Yserbius" -
a game that was originally designed to be played on-line by more than one
player - and have run into what I believe to be a problem. I've gotten my
character up to about level 17 or 18, and am trying to restore the King's
request to have his items "restored" to their original location (crown,
robe and sceptre). In the course of doing so, creatures in the dungeon
have warned me to have one player from my "party" guard the treasures that
I've returned, or imps will steal them. Therein lies the problem: I'm only
one person, and as such *can't* leave somebody else to guard the crown and
robe. They're supposedly put in place, and I've got to the place where
the sceptre is supposed to go... I have the sceptre, but the program won't
recognize it or let me put it in the little "niche". My question is: am
I screwed, on the wrong track (i.e., there's something I haven't done), or
is there a way around this? It seems if I can't solve this, I won't be
able to progress any further in the dungeon so I need help!

1) The message you are getting is primarily a warning to the online player
version (IMHO), i.e. dont teleport out/crash after placing 1 or 2 of the
items, you must wait until all 3 items have been placed, and the treasure
obtained before you teleport out or quit.
Has to do with a now fairly standard technique Joe Y uses to increase the
challenge of the puzzles, albeit one that is kinda frustrating at times in the
online version, when the net or servers are buggy.
2) BTW, strong plug for TSN (now called INN) one of the best MPG/chat etc
national BBS dealie-ma-bops at a truly remarkable price. Wife and I have been
seriously addicted for many months. call 1800-imagine and check it out, less
than 20 bucks for 30 hours and startup package..
