I am on the level called the gate of the ancients and i am obviously
missing something. I have mapped out the entire level that i could get
to. There were a few doors i couldnt open (some had keyholes some didnt)
and i found a way to get to a ladder which gives access to the pits. But
i havent been able to find the way to get to the gate. Any help would be
greatly appreciated

To pass the Gate of The Ancients you got to "travel" many times from
the Gate to the Pits and viceversa. In fact, you got to find the Wolf
Key (it's in the Pits), back to the Gate level, use it, get down again
and so on. To go down you have to use not only the ladder but even the
ground holes, where you can use the Lesser Aerial spell except in one
hole, where you have to suffer some damage...

read the signs on the walls, they tell you he center is the key, that is where
the entrance the next level, in the center. look for buttons on the walls, and
press them. The keys to the doors are in the pits, the first key is near a sign
that says something like "the greedy close all doors" you'll find three doors
in a crosslike area, there are treasures in all the door, but in one there is a
blue thing, that s one of the keys you need to open the doors, take only the
blue thing, or all the other doors lock
