I've read somewhere that AC54 plate can be found, while the
top chain has AC48. That's a pretty small difference. I'm
wondering if it's worthwhile to get plate armor for my
Paladin at all. After all, it slows him down a bit more than
a chain does, at least that's what the manual says.

Looks ugly too! I came to the same conclusion, and am skipping plate.

The truth about this is that when you get either Plate or Chain to
Master level at 10 skill, it says recovery time ELIMINATED. So either
way, there is no difference in the end.

Once you get up to master in plate, the speed penalty disappears. Go for the
plate whenever possible.

The l. 10 part is needed for chain but not plate-all you need for plate
mastery is plate expertise (hence at least l. 4)
and completing the appropriate quest. (hero?)
so I stopped advnacing my plate once I mastered- is there any point in
pushing it to 10?

I beleive armor skill is added to armor class, but I could be
mistaken. I'm not at home right now.

The top (normal) chain is AC 36. Magical enchantments can take this
up to 61. Those same enchantments take the best plate to 79, though.

That said, AC isn't that big a factor. Most monsters you'll worry
about either hurl magic, which ignores AC, or never miss, regardless
of your AC. (My characters have 200 ACs and get hit constantly.)

THAT said, it's always good to keep your options open in case you find
a particularly impressive specimen of plate armor. You don't have to
pour skill points into it until then, but if you ever need it, you
don't have to run around looking for the right guild to learn it.

The effect is negligible. Give him a recovery item and you'll never
know the difference.

Oh yes, quite ugly. Steel plate looks alright, though. Nothing looks
as good as Majestic Chain Mail, though, and nothing else matches the
Angelic Helm so well. Combine that with an Olympian Shield and
Doomsday Cloak and you got da look! (This is what my cleric has, BTW.
She's very selective about her wardrobe.)

I am pretty sure that majestic chain is AC48 base.

I haven't found a Doomsday Cloak yet, but I love the bright red
Cardinal Cloak, sorta reminds me of the Spanish Inquisition sketch
from Monty Python, which I didn't expect.

But then again, NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition!
