I'm asking because it there are restrictions, then that will determine
who I get out the door quicker :)
Thanks in advance,

Pretty sure it's the same restrictions Celeste i.e. only 1 surname per
server. Though there may be something done down the track with that
multi-generational option or marriages.

Well, after I posted this, I did a better search on the LOTRO forums
and it *looks* like something you append to your name, like a title
and the same restrictions won't apply.
That's *if* I read it correctly and read it the way I wanted to see it
<snicker>
Can you decipher this? Looks like it appends to a title. What does
that mean exactly?

When do you even get to have a surname? Is it level-specific, or am I
missing something that is currently available?

My bad then - looks like surnames can be shared, but you may need to
have an active title in order to have it displayed. I'm currently
"Carriona LeFey, Watcher of Roads". Would've liked to have a space in
the "Le^Fey", but ya can't have everything. ;)

At 15th level, you have see a Notary (around most town halls/centres).
Only costs a few silver.

What are the benefits to a surname? I only recall hobbits having them in
the literature. Didn't do them much good.

Elrond Halfelven for one example of an other than hobbit surname. There are
plenty of surnames around, although other than with hobbits, many of them
seem to denote personal accomplishments, characteristics, etc. and are not
passed on. Many of these surnames may not be listed in the "hobbit books",
but LotRO also includes lore from The Silmarillion for sure, and perhaps
other books and even unpublished notes.

I don't think that's his surname - it more like a nickname. But since you
didn't mention any, I'm guessing there is no benefit to having a surname
other than cluttering up the screen with more text.
Mmm, well, I think in the lore what we'd now call nicknames *are* in many
cases surnames, or perhaps the closest thing to surnames some of the peoples
would otherwise have. But yeah, there's no benefit ingame that I know of
other than it being a player perk, and one that I think should be available
only much later and bestowed as some sort of honor.

Agreed. I'm glad they included a surname-only title option though, as my
"Carriona LeFey, Watcher of Roads" was cutting my view window in 2 ;).
