I've made it to the engine room in the planar sphere with demon heart in
hand, but keep getting my butt kicked by the golems that appear. My
main character (a ranger) is 14th level, who is able to kill the iron
golem (? the big one) because it gets stuck in the hallway and can't
move - I just hack at him with a 2-handed sword. The other golems just
swarm and kill each of my characters in about 5 hits.
Any strategies?
Thanks,
Mike
I defeated the smaller ones quite easily (they're not that tough, just use
conventional combat methods) and used the machine in the centre and left
before the big ones could attack me.

* The second rule of combat - never over-estimate your enemy
The smaller ones are easier to kill:
- Iron Golem takes a +3 or better weapon to do damage.
- Stone Golem takes a +2 or better weapon to do damage.
- Clay Golem takes a +1 or better BLUNT weapon to do damage.
... but the all do damage to your party very quickly, so take out the
small ones (that aren't stuck) first.
Keep your weak party members close together make sure a tough party member
is between them and the golems. If they can reach your weak people, they
will kill your weak people quickly. In a pinch, summon up some cannon
fodder (wand of summoning and various other spells) to block for you.
(IMHO, one of the few weaknesses of the BG games is that there are no
"wall" spells, such as Wall of Stone, Wall of Ice, Wall of Force, Wall of
Fog, and so on. The Dark Sun SSI games from way back had those, and they
were quite nifty ... and even Wall of Fog kept the bad guys from shooting
at you, since line-of-sight was blocked!) The most effective tactic along
this lines is to have the weak party members be out of sight of the golems,
either by being far away or by being invisible.
Use ONLY your toughest character to navigate the room. Before doing so,
buff him out with defensive magics and armors. If you tend to distribute
the best armors to several fighters in your group, all your fighters are
decently protected, but not well-protected. Make sure ONE fighter has
the absolutely best AC possible, and if you have the girdle of bluntness,
that'll help, too. Make sure this fighter has two stacks of the Extra-Healing
potions (though he'll only need two or three, it pays to be safe) so that you
don't need to have a vulnerable cleric tagging along. If you have Improved
Haste or a potion of Haste, use that on this fighter. And while dual-wielding
with your Ranger is certainly nice, the AC bonus from a +3 shield can make
all the difference in the world (if a Golem has a 25% chance of hitting you
at your current AC without a shield, adding the +3 shield makes it only 5%).
Since golems do a LOT of damage with a single hit, AC is of paramount
importance.
At absolute worst, you put the best armor, shield and accessories on your
Ranger, and equip him with the Flail of Ages which you surely have by now
(which is quite conveniently a +3 blunt weapon capable of hitting all
golem types). Even if your ranger isn't proficient in flail, it'll suffice
if you have no better one-handed weapon. (With your two-handed sword, you
have no shield, you know!)
If you follow the above advice, you'll take out all of the golems in about 30
seconds (5 rounds) of fighting, and take nary a scratch. Then you'll
think to yourself, "Gee, that was just too easy. They really ought to
make this game more challenging." :)

First, the iron golems block the path of the smaller ones, so you'll first
want to take out as many of the STONE golems as possible with range weapons
(I used Jaheira with +2 bullets in her +3 sling). Stone golems, unlike the
clay golems, can be taken out with range weapons.
I used Minsc, with boots of speed, and an amulet that protected against
poison (can't remember its name), wielding Lilarcor to take out the iron
golems. Minsc never gets hit by anything during this part since he's
invulnerable to the iron golem's cloud magic and the clay golems are
blocked. Once the iron golem goes down, the clay golems come on fast and
hard. I had my other folks (Anomen with a war hammer, Jaheira with a staff,
Yoshimo with Flail of Ages, etc) attack the clay golems while Minsc gets
away asap. Unfortunately, both times Minsc gets caught up in the clay golem
attack and is killed (but easily ressurected without issue). Clay golems are
dead. Room is clean.

Switch to blunt weapons. Use the Flail of Ages, and maybe a +2 or +3
magical club that you picked up somewhere, or something like that. This
battle shouldn't be as hard as you're finding it!
Note that arrows don't do much good, and magic doesn't do much good.

I've just completed this bit (out of sequence, as I thought that was the
way to the outside world to get the hearts...) it's about the only place
I have found so far where monsters cross map boundaries with you. I
placed as many traps as I reasonably could in the "safe" map, next to
the transition stairs, went to the engine room, got some golems to chase
me, followed me to the new map. WhackWhackWhackWhackWhack... only killed
one, but seriously weakened the other enough to kill it reasonably
easily. Sounds easy but of course it wasn't. I only had 2 heads to my
flail :o( must nip back when I can and get that sorted.

P.S. Is it me or is this what Ultima 8 / 9 should have been?
No, flesh golem takes +1 or better weapon.
Stone golem takes +2 or better.
Clay golem takes +3 or better.
Iron golem takes +4/+5.
I have this cheezy strategy to handle all of them with my level 8 - 9 party:
1. Don't take the items first. This way you won't anger them. Now swarm
your party to the flesh golems one by one and finish them first. By that
time Nalia got a short sword+2, Yoshi got a dagger +2, Mincs got Sword of
Chaos +2, Jaheira got quarter staff +1. Aeire and my main character got
nothing useful so they just sat back. My character by that time just dualed
into a mage and proficient in "darts", hehe.
2. After finished the flesh golems, heal. Then swarm your party to the
stone golems. Now only Nalia, Yoshi, and Mincs can get the right weapons to
do damage. Jaheira also sat back. You may want to cast some boosting
spells. Stone golems seem to have some special power to slow you. Take
care.
3. Once all stone golems & flesh golems are slain, you can pick up the
leftmost tomb to loot the 2 most important thingy: the red flail head and
the War hammer +1, +5 vs Giant kin. Now heal & forge the flail below,
identify the hammer, etc.
4. Let Aeire cast santuary to go into the golem room to loot the remaining
items. The golems will turn red but they won't attack Aeire. When Aeire
exit out, memorize as much healing spells as possible and rest your party.
5. After you rested, time to waste out the Iron golem. Equip everything
Minsc to make him as powerful as possible. I give him helm of Balduran, a
medium shield, a ring of protection +1 or whatever to boost his AC to -5.
Then let him drink whatever good potions. I gave him oil of speed, potion
of whatever giant strength, and heroism potion. Cast any boosting spells if
you like. Finally, equip him with the War hammer +1, +5 vs Giantkin. (I
think the Iron golem is a "Giantkin", right?) By that time Minsc didn't get
a star in warhammers, nevertheless after all the boosting potions he got a
THAC0 of about 7.
6. Move your party just in front of the golem room. Let Minsc enter the
door just to trigger the Iron golem. He chased at you! But don't worry as
he can't pass the door. Let Minsc stand in front of the door to hit him.
Take care whenever Minsc's HP is dropped too low *OR* the golem started to
cast the gas cloud spell, move him away from the golem to heal. When the
gas cloud faded out, hit him again. It took me about 1 or 2 minutes real
time to finish him.
7. Now you may want to equip Minsc with the flail of ages to finish the
remaining Clay golem.
That's it.By that time Minsc is only a lvl 8 ranger IIRC. =)

If this was the case, then I couldn't kill the ones in Irenicus's
dungeon. They take +1 or better blunt weapons.

These take any +3 or better weapon. I've killed one with Liarcor (+3),
so I know this for a fact, and it matches the Monstrous manual entry.

This can't be right. I've managed to kill an iron golem with +3
weapons before. Sure you're not thinking of an adamantium
golem or something like that?

They cast a 'golem slow' spell, which is quite nasty. It hurts
your AC and your THACO, and the effects are cumulative.
In the Windspar Hills, I ended up in a long-range fight with
two stone golems and one clay golem (they were stuck
behind an iron golem that couldn't get to me, and wasn't
bright enough to get out of the way to let the smaller ones
through.) I happened to check my character record during
the fight, and my AC had gone from its usual -3 to 10 while
my THACO (usually about zero) went up to 54! It took
quite a while for the effects to wear off.

Explore carefully. Note that some smaller golems become stuck behind the
big ones. Kill the stone golems with +2 arrows and bullets and the clay
golems with Melf's Minute Meteors before you attack the iron golem. Then
you can take your time with that one.

I guess even Adamantium golems can be killed with +3 weapons, beacues my
kensai-mage took the one in the Windspear dungeon down in one-on-one combat
with his Celestial Fury :) (the Katana +3) It just took a while cause each
hit only did about 2 or 3 points of damage...

Yes..., I hate that one. There does seems to be no way to get rid of it
other than letting it run out on its own (whcih does take some time as you
said). Neither Dispel magic nor a Haste spell (which according to its
description is supposed to cancel out 'ordinary' slowing effects) helps...

Or just cloudkill the lot of them. The golems are too stupid to move out
of the cloud.

That works? I thought they were magic resistant? My magic missiles never
work without a Lower Resistance, at least.

The engine apparently treats cloudkill as dealing poison damage, not
magic damage. I'm not complaining....
Hong Ooi wrote in message ...
1) If you use the exit on the left side of the map, the Iron Golem traps
the other golems behind it and the Iron Golem is stuck by the
constricted walkway. Use your ranged weapons to take out the two stone
golems behind the Iron Golem.
2) I cast a few lower resistance spells (I had Nalia, Aerie, and Jan so
lots of spells available there), then hammered the iron golem with magic
missles. (Make sure you have your fighters equipped with blunt weapons).
After the Iron Golem dies, the clay one will charge. I had summoned a
Fire Elemental at this point and between it and my fighters the clay
golem didn't last very long and nobody got hurt.

You know, I've never actually tried Cloudkilling golems or elementals,
reaoning that if they don't breathe, why should they be affected? Dittop
for undead. What's the rationale for it working on Adamantium golems
anyway? Sheesh. Does it kill those annoying mushroom dudes too?

And now I think about it, I took out the same golem
with the Firetooth dagger (+3, and one point fire damage.)
I wonder where the claim of +4/+5 came from?

Maybe the cloudkill gas is not only toxic, but acidid, corroding the golems
slowly :)
Not sure if it makes a difference, but those golems are 'Lesser Clay
Golems'.

Definitely. Pretty sure Clay is +1 or +2, Stone is +2 or better.
