FF7: Mt. Nibel - HOW DO I LEAVE THIS PLACE?

I went through an exit left of another one guarded by a big insect.
Jumped a ledge down, entered, got some materia, followed the path,
went into the place where Sephiroth went crazy before, but the door in
that place is closed. Went all the way back, trying to leave the
place and come back later, but now I can't find a way to leave. Can't
go up the ledge I jumped, and there are no other exits. What can I do?
(other than restore to my last saved game, like 5 levels ago ... yeah,
monsters in this place give lots of xps). Can't even save my game and
try later!

There is another exit behind the reactor (outside) that leads back into
the entrance area. Then, you can attack the insect thing (Materia
Keeper) and proceed.

Well, there IS a point where you can save your game (and restore all
your HPs and MPs, close to the Materia Keeper (The insect you described).
You should be able to get there by walking east of the Reactor where
Sephiroth went insane.
You should try using the pipes (if you haven't done it yet) to get to the
Materia lying on the Rock and to open the Chest on the same screen.
Make sure you've descended the ladders before, so you can climb
back up and try a different pipe if the first one didn't work.

To advance further in the Story you have to fight the Materia Keeper
(just click on him when you're close) and use the exit he guarded.
