It will be totally DISASTROUS and with very damaging and terrible
consequences to PC Games if the PC version of Bioshock outsells in
number of units sold the PC version of Oblivion

Let me explain why.
Yes there is a very strong relation between both games and we can do
in fact such a direct comparison

If you look closely you will see both Bioshock and Oblivion have lots
in common, its almost like brothers, being Oblivion the older
"brother", "born" in 2006 and now Bioshock appearing in 2007

Both are RPG; both are multiplatform; both are high profile; both are
kind of sequels; both have the same audience; both have the same
quality and more important and this part is really important:
Both are published by the same company, Take2!
So with both being so similar there is something that separates them
completely, the copy-protection used, and this is here the danger
resides.
Oblivion uses a simple disk check, which although I would prefer not
being there, its perfectly reasonable and specially its something I
can perfectly live with it.
Now Bioshock has the new AGGRESSIVE Product Activation which is
nothing more than a DRM tied to the hardware and its basically killing
freedom and restricting to the limit consumer rights in PC Games
So Oblivion uses what we can consider the most "friendly" kind of copy-
protection any publisher can use
On the other hand Bioshock uses what we can consider the most
AGGRESSIVE kind of copy-protection any publisher can use
Now both games and in consequence both copy-protections will go head
to head against each other.
It will be Disk Check VS Product Activation
And who will win?
For the sake of PC Games and PC Gamers and FREEDOM its essential Disk
Check and Oblivion to win!
So isn't now clear what I mean with DISASTROUS consequences if the PC
version of Bioshock outsells the PC version of Oblivion in number of
units sold?
If Bioshock outsells Oblivion in number of units sold it will not be
cause of game quality cause both have the same, and it will not be
cause of a bigger fan base, cause in one year fan base doesn't grown
like this, so if Bioshock PC version outsells Oblivion PC version it
will be cause of the copy-protection used.
It will be cause AGGRESSIVE copy-protection used can in fact bring up
sales
It will be the BAD guys outselling the Good guys.
It will be the BAD guys winning and the Good guys losing!
And this will be TERRIBLE! will be DISASTROUS!
At the end those that defend only the use of BRUTE FORCE and VIOLENCE
can solve problems will win and the way of diplomacy, and respect
others and trying to change mentalities will lose.
Product Activation is exactly BRUTE FORCE used in PC Games, with a
simple Disk Check being trying to change mentalities and always
respecting consumer rights.
It will be a TERRIBLE DISASTER if Product Activation wins! with
unpredictable consequences
Just think if Bioshock wins and outsells Oblivion, Take2 will now have
the evidence they need to use Product Activation in all games to come
and you bet other publishers are watching and will follow.
Product Activation in every single PC Game sold! probably in every
single software sold.
Any software for your PC will have Product Activation, and all with
different ones and all with different servers and different
mechanisms, and all of them restricting your consumer rights to the
limit! a total nightmare!

So whos side are you?
Do you want this nightmare to become a reality?
You want to let the BAD guys win? and the Good guys lose?
Is this the ending you want?

I don't want that ending to happen! and I will do what is in my power
to not let this happen! To not let the BAD guys win! and the Good guys
lose!
I'm at the Good guys side!
And I already started doing my part to not let this happen!
I will totally boycott Bioshock! No dime will I give to that crap
Product Activation infected game and for Oblivion I just purchased my
second unit, had bought the 1st last year when it was released and
with the news of Bioshock having Product Activation I decided to buy a
second unit even with Oblivion not being my type of game
So with me its Oblivion = 2, Bioshock = ZERO!
But just me is not enought, so please if you also don't want a PC Game
market dominated by AGGRESSIVE and RESTRICTIVE copy-protections like
Product Activation do something! Vote with your wallet! Don't let the
BAD guys (Bioshock) win and the good guys (Oblivion) lose!
If you can't do like I will do and totally boycott Bioshock cause you
can't stop from playing Bioshock and I understand that at least try to
follow my suggestion in the post I did:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action/browse_frm/thread/347d6d5407e58aad/
And I can summarize them quickly:
. Don't buy Bioshock full price, wait for it to drop in price
. Don't buy any special or collectors edition, just the plain edition
cause its cheaper
. Actually try and play the game in your friends house if he has
bought it so this way you can at least postpone buying it yourself or
even not buy it altogether
. Borrow from your friend if we has bought the game himself
. Use the Used 2nd hand market to either buy it and when finish it
please use it also to sell

For those of us that don't want FREEDOM to be killed from PC Games we
have to do something and its NOW!
Please use everything legal to prevent Bioshock PC version from
outselling Oblivion PC version!
Lets vote with our wallets! Lets show them we are not sheep obeying
submissive followers that will take anything they throw at us!
Please save PC Games!

PS: If you noticed I only focused on the "PC version" and why? Cause
unfortunately I know the total number will be out of our control cause
the damage is done and some PC Gamers will in fact have to buy the
console version to play the game, and I'm talking about those that
don't have a internet connection which are left out from the PC
version due to Product Activation requiring Internet connection, so in
that regard Oblivion already lost cause Bioshock is FORCING some PC
Gamers to abandon the PC and choose the console version cause of
Product Activation which the console version doesn't have, but that we
can't do anything about. Its very unfortunate seeing things like Take2
also damaging the PC but for them its irrelevant if they sell it for
consoles or for the PC cause they always get the same and the extra
money payed by the costumer goes to the console manufacturer, yes that
is right for Take2 it would probably even be good if all went consoles
cause this way next time they didn't have to do two version, very
unfair and very damaging to PC Games and again a reason to go after
Take2, but what we should now do is concentrate on the PC version and
try to forget all this unpleasant details, lets concentrate on the PC
and do our best to save the PC! Lets do it!

Bioshock appears to be more of an action game with limited RPG
elements and pretty focused world. I think it will outsell Oblivion
simply because of its action gamer appeal.

To address your lunatic rambling... How will it be worse for product
activation if it outsells Oblivion? Bioshock isn't released yet, so
has sold zero copies, but still has activation. The copy protection
scheme has nothing to do with sales.

Yep, you can download it now and play the second it becomes active on day of
release.

This is one of the few modern games where I want a proper box and stuff so
I'm still getting a store bought copy, got the collectors edition on
pre-order from Game.

God I hope this game sell more copies than Oblivion, developers need to see
that the PC is a viable market for their software. :-)

Just wish I could afford a new graphics card, my X850 is getting a little
long in the tooth now.

<blathering incoherent prattle snipped for brevity>

What would be DISASTROUS is if Bioshock didn't sell as good as (or better
than) Oblivion on the PC... You constantly whine and moan about the sorry
state of PC gaming and how everyone is moving towards consoles, yet you want
one of the year's biggest releases to fail miserably on the PC? You really
think companies will look at that and say "oh, it must have been because of
the copy protection" when they look at the sales numbers? No, they'll say
"see, the PC gaming market isn't worth it" and move to consoles
exclusively...

Anyone with the slightest smidge of common sense and rationality should be
able to see that... You might check eBay to see if you can buy some for
yourself...

I'm not a fanatic like your buddy PCGames. The copy protection IS the
game for him, apparently.

I'll use STEAM if I have to (HL2 and Episode 1), but if its a game
that is available in retail without STEAM, I'll always opt for that.

Bioshock is not an RPG (and now I wait for a wiseass comment from
someone, that 'neither is Oblivion').

Take2 did not publish Oblivion. They distributed the game. Zenimax -
the parent company of Bethesda, were the publishers.

Care to enlighten us as to what *IS* an rpg in you eyes? (aside from the
various pen-and-paper series')

The last time I checked, role-playing was 'let's pretend' with some
appropriate rules so I'd say that:

Planescape: Torment
Fire Pro Wrestling
Nethack

are palatable examples and that:

Cartoon Tactics Advance (using the Tactics Ogre or Jagged Alliance engine)
Nekketsu Infinite (think River City Ransom with a character generator -for
male and female avatars- PLUS extra moves and clothing options)
Unihack (Basically Nethack + Elite for space travel)
Toon.EXE (another use for the Battle Network Engine)

are unexplored possibilities.

And who cares how many stats are used to build/maintain the player's
character as long as said 'pixel-pusher' has fun (and is able to escape
reality for a while)?

Pan B&O if you want but I enjoyed visiting that plant-based city in
Vvanderfell a lot more than I did on either side of Xeen.
