INTRODUCTION
Being an account of my initial encounter with "Wake of the Ravager"
for the benefit of others and a request for comment.
Anyone with corrections and improvements please mail me at
lst...@aztec.co.za I will correlate and update.
This is definetly version 1.00000
INSTALLATION
I installed a full install (74Mg) off the CD. The memory requirements
should pose a problem only for those unfamiliar with MSDOS*. I had a
multi-boot option that was appropriate.
IMPORTING CHARACTERS FROM DKSUN I
I saw this on the net:
From: step...@mincom.oz.au (Stephen Wales)
Is there any way to import Dark Sun 1 characters into Dark Sun 2 ?
Thanks,
Steve.
From: bare...@cris.com
Definately can do. Covered in docs. Finished the game too long ago
to remember. A friend had some difficulty, but succeeded.
CHOOSING YOUR CHARACTERS
I had not played "The Shattered Lands" and found this a little confusing.
On searching the net in romulus (gopher) and lycos I did not find a FAQ,
only references to Darksun One and so I started this document.
While the purists may take the randomly generated stats the rest of us
will reroll or max out all values. This will minimize the effect of the
racial advantages and thus I have neglected this from my deliberations.
As I enjoy picking fights with innocent monsters for XP's and loot I was
willing to consider building up my characters in multiple classes.
The important things to remember are that:
Non-human characters can be multi-classed; they split
experience among classes and start at level 6.
Human characters can be dual classed; they start over with
the same HP, 0 XP and are unable to access the abilities of
their former class until they have equalled the level of
their former class.
CHARACTER CONSTRAINTS:
Multi-classed characters can have up to 3 classes, XP divided
among the classes.
Humans can start over twice, 3 classes in all.
One can multi-class only one of fighter, gladiator or ranger, and dual
only once to this group. Damn. They are considered to be too close to be
a
separate profession. Ditto Druids and Clerics.
If you are violating the requirements for a specific class, i.e.
inappropriate armor you will not be able to access the special
abilities of that class. (?)
My apologies if the above are obvious AD&D rules, I never played it, I
wouldn't know.
AN EXAMPLE
N.B. In the following > is shorthand for dualled,
/ refers to multi-class characters.
I started out with an elven fighter/thief/cleric,
a Thri-Kreen Ranger/Psionist,
a human Ranger and a human Gladiator.
I immediately dualed the ranger to a thief and he was at level 5
after the first fight. (That's when I saved and wrote this
entire document.) I intend to dual him again to a Preserver.
After that I can dual the Gladiator to Cleric.
It's Standard Operating Procedure to never have more than one
character at low levels at a time, it's far too risky.
My final configuration should be:
1.)fighter/thief/cleric
2.)ranger/psionic
3.)ranger>thief>preserver
4.)gladiator>cleric
Note that ranger>preserver gives the preserver the ranger's and thief's
special abilities as preservers can't wear amour anyway.
Gladiator>cleric
gives the cleric the gladiators AC bonus as clerics *can* wear armor.
The latter is why I don't care for Druids. Having one character in the
group who can't wear armor, (the preserver,) is quite enough!
Note that I gave the 3X multi-classed character the classes that require
less XP to advance than the 2X multi-classed.
Note that the preserver character, (#3) which requires more XP than the
cleric is changed to preserver before the gladiator becomes a cleric.
The initial advantages of early dualing from fighter classes is that
one has high HP in the low magic user levels.(?) I noticed that
as my dualed character advanced after the first fight, his HP did not
increase. That happens when the level of the new class exceeds that of
the
first, as per AD&D rules. My brother says so!
The disadvantage is that what will finally be my magic users will be low
to begin with at the start of the game in comparison with fighters #1
and #2.
The starting inequalities should iron themselves out at the higher
levels.
I will attempt to simulate this.
I apologize in advance for the errors in my arithmetic, I have installed
the game, searched the net, generated my characters, played the first
combat, written this, posted it and I think I should get some sleep
real soon now, it's some time since I had some.
At 300,000 XP per person, (XP is divided equally among the party)
1.)fighter 7 /thief 8 /cleric 7
2.)ranger 8 /psionic 8
3.)ranger 7 >thief 9>preserver 10 ?
4.)gladiator 9 >cleric 1 ?
At 900,000 XP
1.)fighter 9 /thief 11 /cleric 9
2.)ranger 9 /psionic 10
3.)ranger 7 >thief 9>preserver 11 ?
4.)gladiator 9 >cleric 11 ?
At 1,500,000 XP
1.)fighter 10 /thief 12 /cleric 10
2.)ranger 10 /psionic 11
3.)ranger 7 >thief 9>preserver 13 ?
4.)gladiator 9 >cleric 12 ?
At 2,100,000 XP
1.)fighter 10 /thief 13 /cleric 11
2.)ranger 11 /psionic 13
3.)ranger 7 >thief 9>preserver 15 ?
4.)gladiator 9 >cleric 14 ?
Hmmm! That turned out not quite how I expected. The advantages of
dualing
over multi-classing were more than I expected. Nevertheless this
configuration does has moderate fighters and high level magic users
just when I estimate thing will start to get interesting. In my
opinion magic user's powers are more level dependent than stats
dependent,
as so many spells are "plus x per level". Fighters of course are
the opposite as better stats and the famous "+4 Flaming Sword of
Cuinisart" are
far more important than a few extra hit points.
All the same maybe I should re-think this strategy. When I wake up.

Those more experienced may prefer to edit your config.sys and
autoexec.bat
in the normal way to optimize memory and put a pause statement in your
autoexec.bat
and CTRL-C to the command prompt if you wish to bypass win95. You may
get more
memory that way.
Q2.
From: s00...@paladin.wright.edu (MICHAEL HOLLAND)
My problem is this: In the jann camp, there is a woman that is weaving a
tent/tapestry. I now I have to have dye, thread, and a tapestry to use
the loom and so far I have the dye and I have the vest that I get the
thread from. However, no matter what I try, I cannot get thread from the
vest and I have no idea where the tapestry is. Any and all help will be
greatly appreciated.
