What a shame PB had to go and ruin a great game with
the worst ending I have ever seen. I finally finished it, but
it was pure luck, and only after 20 or 30 failures. There is
no skill involved. You simply have to get lucky and jump
the right direction each time .. and do it 5 or 6 times.
I can get to 3 times striking the Big Creep, but the last
2 are impossible to predict. I made one of them just
jumping backwards blind and landed in the air, but then
I jumped forwards and got to a square. Stupid.

Also, the code for the binocular is broken. You don't
need to put it on at all. I also think there is more
broken code in that absurd ending, and it is where
squares that are not flashing also disappear. That is
why the ending is pure luck. And it is not in the
theme of the game at all. The ending is just stupid
little kid stuff that got tacked on as an afterthought
... or a no-thought. It has nothing to do with the
game itself.

Risen needs a patch for a different ending in line
with the theme that the Hero is building towards
for the entire game. Otherwise, the game is just
a total waste of time. If nothing else, we should
be able to do a quick save after each hit, so we
don't waste too much time on this POS.

P.S. I think it might be pretty obvious from the thread title, and the poster,
this this is going to contain end game spoilers. Who will be the first to
complain I wonder? ;-)

I'm looking into fixing the end game. I think I might be
able to edit an ini file and greatly increase the hit point
value of the Titan Hammer. It is not high at all , and if
I increase it to 500, I should only have to clobber the
Fire Titan twice instead of 5 or more times. I counted
my "clobber" times, and I swear I think it was 7 times
instead of 5 .. or else some of the "clobbers" did not
score .. very probable.

I noticed that the hit points in the 4th Chapter seem to
drop by a factor of 2. In chapter 3, I had no problems
with the Lizard Warriors using an Obsidian 1-hander
of hit 50 and only sword level 2. I got stupid towards
the end of the chapter and started spending my
Lpoints on sword level up to Sword 6. I saw immediately
that my sword skill declined a lot .. bad code .. so
I was forced to use a 2-hander with shield. From that
point on I could not win against a Lizard Warrior .. when
I had been beating as many as 3 of them at a time.
Again this is bad code ... and exactly the problem I
saw in Gothic 3 until it was patched. The problem is
that the tactics of the higher sword levels simply
don't work, plus they add to the tactics the LW can
use against you. Chapter 4 becomes a joke, and
you must resort to exploits to get through it .. like
conjuring Skeleton Warriors to defend you. Then,
you don't need sword skills at all. I even used Fred
to beat the Inquisitor .. easily. Would be nice if
Fred could help with the Fire Titan the way I did
it in Gothic 2 LOTR. There, I conjured 2 "friends"
who ate that last Dragon down to low health
while I finished him with my bow. That was a
good ending, and the game felt right.

I think the best "fix" for Risen will be an edit of
the ini to give us weapons that balance out the
"leveling up" of Chapter 4 ... and the final Boss
battle. If I can reduce that final battle to 2 hits,
it won't be such a nuisance, and make me feel
like a kid gamer punking around in WOW.

Are you the deliberate Spoiler-King of Usenet? Or WHAT?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST PERMANENTLY EITHER SHUT UP, OR TAKE YOUR INANE
COMMENTS TO SOME FORUM OTHER THAN comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg.....

Complaining about spoilers with a post named that way is like
complaining to your wife about porn that accidently found its
way on your hard drive, really.

"I swear i didn't know this post was about the end of Risen,
baby!"

It's not worth considering. Anyway, I got it. I can do the end game
Boss fight easily. Here's how:

SPOILER

Be shelled out of the game to the Main page.
Type minsky <enter> to enable the console
then hit shift "~" to bring up the console
type god
hit shift "~" to exit console

Enter the game just before walking into the Fire
Titan arena. Note: you don't need the Inquisitor's
Ocular.

Walk in, and go through the intro .. get ready
and walk towards the Titan to the 3rd square.

Block the rays back at the Titan, and when he
crouches, go in and hit him once with the hammer.

Note: turn around, but stay by the Titan's feet, and
let him stomp all he wants. He can't hurt you.

Watch for a 3rd square that is not blinking, and
after a few stomps, move out there and face the
Titan again .. while closely watching the square
for blinks. If necessary move back to the Titan's
feet until you see a stable square. Then repeat
the ray blocking with your shield, and when the
Titan crouches again, go clobber him again.

You'll probably do this maybe 6 or 7 times .. not
5 like the web sites say. Just stay by the Titan's
feet and watch for the stable square each time
before going out to block more rays. It is very
easy .. take your time ... and you'll beat this
STUPID end game, and the credits will run.

Also, after the game is over, and you might want
to start a new game, exit the game entirely, and
restart. Godmode is gone, and you have a new
game to explore .. the GOOD part of Risen.

Some people would considers the post's subject alone to be a spoiler. A
more considerate subject would be "Risen ending (spoilers)" Then he can
continue to babble about how he thinks it sucks. Personally I don't
think it's a massive spoiler but I'd never be ignorant enough to assume
that others shared my point of view as johns obviously is.

johns is no longer kill-filed, but I generally just skip his posts to
look at the often amusing replies.

But yes, in this case the title is a bit of a bitch, certainly since
another person has agreed with him. Kinda kills the motivation to even
bother taking a look at the game.

Considering the fact how something sucks or not is a matter to opinion,
it's not really a spoiler.

Thought I agree with you other's may not, for that reason a more
considerate subject would have boon polite.

Eh .. yelling is kind of dated. I mean if I was seriously
trolling, he'd be a keeper.

I've started the game for the 3rd time, and this time
I used several cheats to balance the game from the
start, and make it less tedious, but still a challenge.

I set difficulty to Normal, but I gave myself str 100
and dex 100. Then I added a Bone Bow and a
1-handed Obsidian sword. That was enough to
make 1 on 1 combat fair, and the pace of the
game more normal. This will work up to chapter
3, and then the level up of the Lizard Warriors
will require that I also level up to maintain equity
and a reasonable pace ... probably, I'll go str 100
again plus I'll figure out enough Life points to make
combat possible 1 on 1 without all the outside
"help". I really get tired of having 40 LWs chase
me all the way out to have somebody else fight
them. That is nothing but exploits .. not much
fun.

Actually I have not played it so far but I have read about it
the entire thing reminds me a lot on the boss fights of Zelda.
Aka run around in circles find the weak spot hit it repeat and rinse
while you try to avoid the obstacle the boss throws at you.

You can find such a mechanic pretty much in every Nintendo game, and
once you are used to it, it is not that bad. Btw. Zelda as well as Okami
is heavily recommendable although I would not rate it as an RPG in the
classical sense (you progress through items you obtain and it is very
puzzle heavy)
